To those that questioned my comparison to promotion or the paint trophy, yes I know EL winners get a spot in the CL but, and this is my opinion only, you don't get the same pull for strengthening as you do by finishing in the league spots. So the next year you're a bit out of your league.
It's a bit like when a championship club wins the FA Cup and qualifies for the Europa league. They aren't suddenly gonna sign Aguerro.

Well no but I still don't understand your logic.

Whether we get CL through finishing 4th or winning the EL we are not suddenly going to buy Aguero. I don't think our position would be particularly different however we achieve CL.

I don't agree that finishing 4th will give us more pull than winning the EL.

Every year , I say the same on this issue .

We haven't come within a million miles of even the faintest , tiniest sniff of success in the EL . Whichever squad we use the story is exactly the same every season . The idea that if we put our strongest team out for every ELmatch, it will change this clearest of trends , is fanciful to put it mildly .

4th on the other hand has been a win or two away every single year for ages .... We even made it twice .

We have all sorts of good players bubbling under , blend them in as appropriate in the EL campaign , but any concept of weakening the Prem to concentrate on the EL....is seriously nutty imo .

In addition re FA or League Cup...these are doable..its only what , 5-6 matches . The EL is 19 matches to win...many of those in deepest Asia . There's no comparison in the squad strain with domestic cups .

The el is 17 games to win if you start in the group stage as we did this year. Knock off 6 games for the group stage that leaves you with 11 games of which you have to win 6 minimum to lift the trophy.
There are 27 games in the prem left. How many do we need to win at least to get 4th spot?

It's actually an extra day or two days and it's most of the time.
Here is my solution, play CL and EL rounds on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, UEFA or the broadcasters want them separated fine just rotate the days, Europa would play Thursday this week, Tuesday next round, Wednesday the following round and so on and so forth, do the same with a one day shift for the CL.
That keeps them to separate nights but levels out the imbalance; how easy is that.

Or you could play opposite weeks.

I want to over simplify this thread. If Spurs enter it, then they play to win it. Every cup and the league. If they do not plan to compete to win, then they should not bother entering.

basically goes for all teams, but for me particularly Spurs. winning is contagious, don't dump out of a tournament and then wonder why they then drop points in the league. Harry used to drive me crazy with this. He just should not have entered...

off soapbox now :pompous:

If we finish 5th and win the Europa league maybe not.
If we finish 9th and win the Europa league I don't think we'd be any better off than just getting a Europa league place.

AND no one seems to have mentioned the obvious, it's easier to finish 4th than it is to win the Europa league. As we've proven by finishing 4th twice and not winning the Europa league.

I have mentioned that this season getting 4th is a better possibility than winning the EL, many others in this thread have said the same.

I don't think we are realistically going to finish 9th. I'd genuinely be shocked if we finish outside the top 6.

Absolutely spot on, we haven't come close. 4th spot is acheivable and will enable us to potentially strengthen with targets we may not get with EL alone.

For all those who love the EL so much, question....

What strength side would you be happy to take on an 8 hour flight to play FC Qarabag (returning Saturday AM) when we play Chelsea on Sunday?

What difference does that make?!? The EL starts in September and every PL point counts from August on. So 17 games is 17 games, almost half a league season.

The point is the group stages should be used to keep the squad match fit and blood the youngsters. We should have enough quality in the squad to get through.
We've suffered injuries this season which has hampered us as have some of our performances.

By the way how many points have we lost in the league that we would have got if we didn't play el?

Ffs we have won one trophy in 14 years and you would turn your nose up at the chance of winning one?

I'm totally fine with playing youngsters in this competition, although I do think this season we are lighter than previous and are pretty much forced to play some first teamers very game

If you look back over the years that we've been playing EL football you'll see that we've not only lost games on the Sunday, (I despair the amount of stats showing how many games lost come after a EL game) but cost us one CL qualification to no other than Arsenal by one point. It's no coincidence that the only time we get CL is the season we aren't in the EL.

Hey, I love European nights and would love us to win a trophy but as others have eloquently stated this completion is harder to win than any of the other cups we are in AND it hurts our league form.

This isn't a new debate, same old argument season after season. This year we have a younger squad and have done much better on the Sunday....so let's see.

One last thing.....the financial benefit of the CL is about to become far less than it was as the PL TV money skyrockets. Couple that with our new stadium and we should be able to build a successful squad capable of winning trophies with or without CL football soon.

The futures bright....

Agree. We won't buy any established world class players, they cost too much and are too much of a risk. Instead we'll continue to go for youth and players with potential. Our strategy is clear (I like the look of Tielemans by the way playing tonight ;))
