Whilst those might be peak ages, players do not fall off those peak ages and become horrendous players overnight, dier having only had his 29th birthday in january should still be very close to his peak as opposed to winding down his career.

Personally i dont mind him as a backup 2 rather than primary backup - i wouldnt want him to be the next man up should we lose one starting CB to injury, like Holding has been the last two years at arsenal which has cost them dearly. But should any reasonable offer come in i'd rather we took that and moved on.

I'm not too fussed with him being a 4th choice CB for example because I don't think it's feasible for us to sell Tanganga, Sanchez, Rodon and Dier all in the same summer (Lenglet going back to Barca too) and then bring in 3 CBs, when we also need a GK, possibly a LB, 2 x CAMs and a WF.

If you ignore how good or bad you think Dier is though, I think the biggest thing with him now is too much has gone on, he's been here too long with too many managers not improving and the fans have turned. I think it's as important for him as it is for us as a club that he moves on but like I said, I'm not sure it's feasible this summer.

Personally I'd bring in a starting quality LCB, another younger CB and then have Dier as 4th choice. Then let him run down his contract and leave next summer.

The issue I have with Dier being our backup CB, is that if there is a long term injury then he immediately becomes our starter again.

This has been a massive issue across the squad for a while now, where the gulf in quality is huge between our starters and their backups.

We need to manage the squad better and be more ruthless in getting rid of our players that just aren't up to the standard.

If your options for back up CBs are:

Dier
Sanchez
Tanganga

Who do you trust most?

Follow-up question - lets say you decide to sell Dier this summer, who are you signing to be a back-up CB (caveat it has to be someone you trust to be the starter)? And how much will this new player cost?

I honestly get where you are coming from, and all the options are horrific. Which is why I stated our squad has been mismanaged for so long.

We've never actually replaced Toby or Jan.

I get the argument for keeping Dier for a year, I would just rather we hadn't left ourselves in this position.

CB and GK need to be our main focus this transfer window. We have enough in midfield and up front to remain competitive but our back line is horrendous, so just prioritise those positions.

I would rather have sanchez because at least he has some pace and isn't part of the leadership group that has failed this club. Sanchez would be more willing to sit on the bench

Sanchez needs to be sold too but Dier has to be ripped from the squad. I would rather have none of them than any of them stay.

Id rather the next coach can figure something out with a youngster or use another player from a different position to fill in.

We need to cut down the squad to 20 players who are hungry and can play in multiple positions.

i think he has another renaissance in him.

but every spurs fan watching the game(s) can see that he steps away from the defender, doesn't want to commit and is a huge risk of getting run at. You can't have that at a top club. he's compensating for dodgy legs or something.

so if the opportunity arises, i'd love to ship him to everton (insert big club in bottom half) for an inflated price and see him do ok for years. think darren gibson from utd to everton....

and i respect that he (should) give us leadership and calmness from the back. it's something we are severely missing. which is why it's great that Gravidol and De Ligt are coming in the summer....

If we play a higher line next season, would lean towards keeping Sanchez purely because he is more mobile and has more pace than Dier. However to counter that, don't think he is particularly great defending on the front foot especially knowing when it comes to his decision making in terms of when to nip in front of forwards. Another problem is his head becomes scrambled to often and that is usually a recipe for disaster in a high line especially if he was paired with Romero who has shown he can also lose his head. However DIer......the thought of him getting caught out on the turn and then chasing forwards like a mummy walking in quicksand is the stuff of nightmares.

Know its unrealistic to get rid of most of our CB's and we are talking about them as backups for next season but man is it depressing going through the pro's and cons of players we know are clearly not good enough.

I mean, it's for the best. For his sake as well as ours. He needs a new start somewhere else.

Comes from this article: https://t.co/AUJ4Hu1D1J

Ultimately we need to wait for confirmation of the new manager to decide who is in his plans for the new season, with the full support of the club's recruitment team to bring in new talent. Club management may be having discussions about contract renewals at least to keep our options open, but I doubt anything will be signed off without the incoming manager's say so.

We all hope that someone like Slot comes in, and much like the beginning of Poch's reign decides who's time is up at the club (Adebayor, Kaboul and Capoue) and which players he can trust to progress his ideas on the pitch. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the elder players contracts will be allowed to lapse, in much the same way that Liverpool are waving goodbye to Milner, Keita, Ox and Firmino.

Second, we can't afford to simply replace Sanchez, Tanganga, Dier, Davies/Lenglet all at once. Its one thing to move them all out, which won't happen, but its another altogether to waste precious transfer budget on back-up CBs to replace them.
This is the key for me. I don't want to see us spending a single penny on "squad players". There's only two kinds of players I want to see us spend money on - guys who are good enough for the starting XI now, and young guys who have the potential to be good enough for the starting XI in a few years. Use those young guys, plus existing players and the U21s for squad depth.

He seems a top bloke, but we really really shouldn’t be giving him a new contract as sadly he just isn’t good enough.
