You're right, him being a bad player - is what makes him a bad playerThat's actually not how it works. Studies show that the peak age for CBs is 26-28. Dier is past his prime - but that does not make him a bad player.

The issue I have with Dier being our backup CB, is that if there is a long term injury then he immediately becomes our starter again.
If your options for back up CBs are:
Dier
Sanchez
Tanganga
Who do you trust most?

Follow-up question - lets say you decide to sell Dier this summer, who are you signing to be a back-up CB (caveat it has to be someone you trust to be the starter)? And how much will this new player cost?
Not sure he is as such. I think Dier just plays left side and Lenglet was preferred. Sanchez is more for the right side.Interesting that even Davidson sanchez is now ahead of him
Until Sanchez regularly starts. . .Interesting that even Davidson sanchez is now ahead of him
This is the key for me. I don't want to see us spending a single penny on "squad players". There's only two kinds of players I want to see us spend money on - guys who are good enough for the starting XI now, and young guys who have the potential to be good enough for the starting XI in a few years. Use those young guys, plus existing players and the U21s for squad depth.Second, we can't afford to simply replace Sanchez, Tanganga, Dier, Davies/Lenglet all at once. Its one thing to move them all out, which won't happen, but its another altogether to waste precious transfer budget on back-up CBs to replace them.
