For someone who is the last line of defence he sure has no urgency. Its like he still has the mindset of a defensive midfielder as if there's defenders behind him.

just not good enough, mobility of a broken truck, even if he had urgency, his body couldn't do anything about it

Could & should've got across to block the first shot leading to the goal. He was too busy waving Forster back rather than busting a gut to make the tackle.
Just the same mistakes over and over again.

I thought he was OK. Certainly no worse than Romero and Lenglet.

The trouble is Dier is the one in everyone's sights so anything half bad gets amplified beyond belief and anything decent didn't happen. Imagine it was him that ended up on his arse when losing a header leading up to the goal, there'd be 15 pages of new comments.

Didn't see Lenglet do anything bad apart from a couple of wayward passes. I might have dozed off a few times though tbh.

Get the feeling that all the cool kids like Romero, so he's pretty much untouchable. The days of the Dele and Dier love in are long gone.

I doubt he would even go to make that challenge. He would have let their player chest that down run at him while backing off giving them five yards to get an easy pass or shot off. That’s what he’s resorted too. More concerned with his reputation by not making obvious mistakes than actually trying to be proactive and help us defend an action.

People are brainwashed, every time Romero fucks up people want to give him falacio and try to blame his mistake on another player.

One of the advantages of playing 3 CBs is meant to be that one can engage and still have the other 2 covering. Dier just doesn't engage and seems more interested in keeping his hands behind his back than actually defending. He's the absolute antithesis of Romero in that respect.

One of his greatest qualities is his heading which makes it so infuriating how many times he botches headed chances from set pieces.

This 100%. Just worry about your own game FFS. Had he gone full tilt into a challenge he’d have slid the ball out for a corner, but no, as usual point somewhere and allow Hernandez the freedom of the Sansiro.

It reminded me of the Newcastle game where he was screaming for a foul on Lloris rather than running back to the line where he could have headed away Wilson's chip.

At 29 years old, Dier should on paper be the more experienced, senior defender who is settled at the club/league and able to direct and bring calm to the defence. Nothing about him screams that at all. If anything, think he is more likely to unsettle those around him and actually needs to be directing through games himself.

Romero has his faults for sure but he makes less mistakes than Dier and he contributes more on the ball. I don't see much that Dier brings to the table to be honest. I think a modern day keeper replaces the need to have Dier who is basically there to pick the ball up from Lloris who can't pass. Get a good keeper on the ball and split 2 centre backs freeing an extra body further forward. Now we just split 2 centre backs and have Dier doing the keepers job so it's a waste of a player. Its why we are so deep because Dier is essentially playing his old holding role a lot deeper. A top keeper plays in that role on the edge of the box rather than having Lloris picking passes up on his goal line and everything is started 10 yards deeper inviting pressure.

People give Romero a break because they can see he's an excellent defender, that is quick, aggressive, good with the ball and decisive.

People hate on Dier because he is slow, timid, poor with the ball and indecisive.

I don't know why there is anyone still bothering to defend him, probably because he seems like a nice guy. He's got too many scars and will never be good, people can say 'oh he should just be a squad player'. I don't get the vibe he would be happy with that, seems to have an elevated status within the club after being there so long.

If we are a sporting institution that wants to achieve success on the pitch he should be ruthlessly culled. It should have happened years ago but Levy believe Mourinho when Jose said he just had to tweak a few things to make us winners. We've needed to be gutted for about 3-4 years and Dier should have been head of the list.
