Winks was actually worse than dier
True, but the problem is the same for Winks. He can't do what he does best because he needs muscle and athleticism alongside him. Dier isn't that. If we are to go with the CM2, personally I would take Dier out of the equation whether that's by making him CB or selling him. I'd then bring in a top class CDM, give Skipp a go as a rotation option (he's very underrated in the tackle) and play either alongside Ndombele or Winks. I'm still unconvinced by Sissoko's ability to move the ball effectively and evade pressure, but I guess he would be fine as an emergency option there too.

Not sure about that, Winks made a few errors but he was at least getting into places to make errors, Dier was hardly moving, the game was just passing him by, you cannot be the defensive midfielder and have the game pass you by. Mourinho made the right call taking Dier off and not Winks.

He's got that in him. but be careful as he's got friends in high places round these parts that are similarly shouty-downy. Ignore's a good option as the input is predictable anyway.

I‘Ve lurked here for itk for a while so got to know which posters continually post the same kind of thing, have ego problems Etc. Before I started posting I knew there would be at least three people on my ignore list sooner rather than later. One down. Lol

And Mourinho was quick to apologise to Dier, insisting his performance was not the reason for his substitution.

“The first thing I want to say is to publicly what I did in the dressing room is to apologise to Eric Dier. It is never easy for a player but not for the coaching staff either. It was for the team and we needed a different solution,” Mourinho told BT Sport.

“We were losing 2-0, they were closing really well and I needed a second man with Dele Alli to come into the pockets. It was between Dier and Harry Winks but a hard decision.

“They understand, Eric understands but the reality it is never a easy and to make it clear, it was about the team not individuals. I thought about taking out one of the centre-backs and putting Eric in defence.

They were both dreadful. Dier was actually shit because psychically he looked like a clogger and was completely at sea positionally.

Winks was terrible in possession, kept getting dispossessed and running into trouble and his passing was abysmal.

It's ok to say they were both dreadful, neither are close to being good enough.

Manager needs to make that call, it’s hard, but Dier looks like he needs to get his fitness up a bit and tactically what Jose said makes sense.

second half I thought Winks was ok but yeh first half he was pretty crap. I am more concerned with Dier than Winks though, it’s like his fitness has gone.

Jose post match apologizing to Dier and admitting that he maybe he should've made some changes going into the game.

People say he has a wonderful mentality, I think he's full of shit, if we was a real winner he'd focus on playing the position he is best suited for instead of the position he wants to play. He could be a world class CB, but he idiotly insists on being played in the midfield and the whole team suffers for it.

Any other input tonight?
Was waiting for you to come at me. Fair play, certainly wasn't a great performance for him.

I never said he was going to be the end all CDM solution for us, but I did say he could find his feet and be a valuable option for us in the position up through January. I'm still not going to jump on his back after this performance. I'll trust Mourinho's vision, there's been no reason to do otherwise thus far.

Very very little evidence of him being a good CB let alone ever being world class. He's had far more shit games than good ones at CB for us. In fact he's a bit of a donkey back there. I really want Dier to get back to how he used to be, but he is going to start running out of opportunities soon. He really needs to turn it around. He was our most upgradeble player in the first 11 two seasons ago and it's got worse.

Agree but to me he's hasnt showed his quality at CB bc he's distracted by his distorted fantasy of being a cultured defensive midfielder.

Judging by your post you seem a bit angry, I'll wait until the morning time when you calm down.

Looks off the pace, understandable given how little he has placed. Saying that, long term I just don't think he is the solution at DM. I know Mourinho has mentioned he wants someone with positional strengths for that position, but I think we can do better and get someone who has those strengths but is also more mobile and dynamic than him.

He just feels like a DM of yesteryear. You look at the likes of Kante, Fabinho etc and how they get about the pitch, Dier will never be that kind of player. Teams that press effectively like Liverpool and City must love seeing Dier in the oppo line up as it's so easy to nip in and get the ball off him due to him having the mobility of an oil tanker and looks like a defender playing in midfield.

Yup. Think his best chance of really making a position his own was at CB. Unfortunately him playing in midfield has somewhat put paid to that as has meant as he just hasn't spent enough time playing in defence to hone his skills and develop into a quality CB. Now we have a jack of all trades master of none, useful squad player on our hand imo. Not going to be a top quality defender or midfielder, just a useful player to have in the squad.

He did a good, not spectacular job imo when he was next to Dembele and to be honest Dembele is such a monster of a player, most players playing next to him will look good. We had fullbacks in Walker and Rose bombing forward and he was good at filling in behind them when they pushed forward. However, he gets badly shown up in midfield against teams who really press and put pressure on him. Liverpool and City have a field day up against him in midfield and even the goons target him at their place.
