Not as good as wanyama at hunting ball down though

That's true but it illustrates how they're different types of DMs. As a rough example using our former players for comparison Dier is more of a Carrick type in that he holds his position in front of the defence and plays forward passes whereas Wanyama is more of a Parker type in that he's all over the pitch breaking things up and mostly passes short.

Honestly folks are mis-remembering the start of this season. First 4 games he was in midfield with victor because of the dembele suspension and the next 2 games he had to drop into the back line because Rose being injured cause a tweak. Then Eric got injured, came in as a sub in the City game (first game back from injury so not sure fitness levels). Next game comes on as a sub for Toby (WBA) and has been at the back since.

Now Eric knows that Poch's best defensive option for the team is to put him back there next to Jan. No question.
The first game when he was available to play midfield without compromising the back 4 was old trafford and i actually think that the Herrera comments were at the back of Pochs mind (not that he didn't trust dier but would the ref be influenced) - if they weren't, they should have been.

Now tonight sees a formation shift for the good of the team and he played a good role in a win.

Also worth noting Eric himself has said he has been out of sorts due to euros.

Here are two important quotes - from the ES:
“People always seem to want to pin me down to one position but I see players all over Europe who play in more than one. It ensures they get appearances for their clubs and it’s a fantastic weapon for a manager.

“It’s a bit stupid to be talking about it [playing in a specific position]. If I could get to the level of players like Alaba, Lahm or Mascherano, I would be a very happy man.”

and 90 min:

“It has been tough coming back late from the Euros because I haven’t really been able to get going. Then I got injured a couple of games into the season and that halted me again. And when Toby got injured I played at the back again.

"This is football and these things happen to everyone.

“It has not been a catastrophe – it has just been a bit of a low start. I don’t think there has ever been a really low point. It is just about getting back to where I want to be.”

So where has the talk of him leaving come from? Seen Poch saying he isnt in post match interviews but I hadnt seen anything to say that he could be off. Seems very odd

Some bored inbreds making shit up as per usual. Start a blog or get a job as a football journo and you have carte blanche' to say absolutely anything you want without consequence no matter how outrageous or scandalous.

Looks like it all started with an article in the Times, then the hacks picked it up. It's all a load of bollocks IMO and I don't even see a shred of evidence to support it but there are quotes from Dier himself that contradict the Times/hacks articles.

I was happy that Poch came out and killed the story after the game last night.
I actually wish we would be even more aggressive on the media response front. As soon as these muppet journos publish garbage release a statement from Levy/ Poch saying it is unsubstantiated sh1t. Do that a few times and they will move on to trying to destabilize some other club....think of it as political rapid response.

And name and shame the journo bringing their reputation into question...

I actually think that Poch has shown great faith in Eric by putting him into the CB position in front of last season's deputy Kevin Wimmer. He's had his own injury and form issues, yet Poch has ensured he remains match fit and if he does or has lose/lost his CM position or finds himself on the bench once in a while, with the likelihood of injuries and plenty of fixtures, he'll have ample opportunity to get back in.

I don't think that's down to faith more common sense. Poch likes to play defenders on their strongest side so Wimmer was never going to play alongside Vertonghen.

Valid point, but most left sided players are right footed though aren't they?

Really fortunate (or great scouting) to have this kid in our team, if not for his ability then his personality/character.

This guy is vital to our future. Very few players can control a game and the shape of their team.

We're incredibly lucky to have an English player with his attributes.

He makes everyone else play better.
