Is the general consensus that we do have money but ENIC are just not willing to spend, or are we actually skint?

If it’s the latter, then why? The stadium is financed through long-term deals, and Covid doesn’t seem to have affected our rival’s (and some clubs below us) spending…plus we’ve been run prudently for so many years so really we should be in a better position than most!

I think that is pretty much as good an interview he could give at the moment
Yea it really wasn’t the worst to be fair but it could’ve been better and was a big opportunity to really try and make a more positive impression, bit of an opportunity missed if you ask me just in terms of the general tone and some of the answers, he says he/ENIC aren’t just about money and every penny goes back into the team, does it fuck!

If he steps away from the football side of the business especially meaning that we can have a clear consistent plan on the football side and don’t leave negotiations until the last day and/or fuck them up so we pull out of good opportunities to save pennies.

If Paratici is quality then we might start to get back to where we want to be, next manager is so important.

When he says ‘invested £1bil’ into the club surely that is bullshit as ENIC haven’t put in a penny, they’ve just managed the financing of the stadium and how much debt we have and how we need to pay it back.

Like everyone else, the fact he came out and wrote himself some questions to answer on camera is very surprising.

He’s definitely feeling the heat, which I guess is slightly satisfying at least.

The worry thing for me is him warning of ‘financial prudence for the next few years’. Well what the fuck do you call the last 20 years?!

And him trying to temper fans expectations of the amount of money that will be available, in the same breath as saying we want to be successful is exactly why fans are fed up and angry with him.

He has to pick a side. Either attempt to invest a similar amount to our rivals so we can compete on the pitch, or hold your hands up and say ‘guys, we’re gonna have a scrappy couple of years due to COVID and the stadium, as we prepare to put ourselves in a stronger position for the future’.

He wants to convince fans they’re doing everything they can to win, while also warning we’ve got no fucking money. THATS what causes the disconnect. His promises don’t match his actions.
Absolutely spot on it’s the lack of trust we have in him by the actions rarely matching the words and/or the words just being full of shit anyway, it’s all so impersonal.

Also stop saying you’re a fan Daniel you’re not one of us don’t disgrace us like that comparing yourself to actual proper fans.

Can’t help but feel this is designed to temper expectations and soften the blow of the Fonseca appointment that he knows will cause an uproar amongst fans. Especially if it gets worse and Kane leaves and then we don’t reinvest the full fee we get. Which we won’t. It all feels very contrived.

When he spoke of the opening/completion of the new stadium he was clearly emotional.

When he was with Poch on the pitch during the CL he looked uncomfortable being there.

When he speaks about the fans and success it always feels forced. When he speaks about the financials he always seems like that it's closer to his heart.

Let's face it. He's an accountant. He takes more pleasure from seeing the numbers add up in the sheet than he does seeing tge club pick up points.

1000% Kane is gone. That's why JJ said in his opinion he thinks he's gone. He knows Levy and he knows that in this climate Levy will do whatever it takes to get the financials back to a balance he's comfortable with.

I accepted this sometime ago, and I accepted its why we will never ever win anything under his reign.

Just gotta hope Paratici can find some gems on the cheap and Fonseca can give us style and confidence.

I get the impression that Levy just loves the dog fight of a negotiation but is one of those people that has the mentality that in every negotiation there must be winner and loser, which shouldn’t be the case and his desire to save money here in there has caused some deals for players we needed to blow up in his face.

So interesting to read all the comment on here.

That video is fascinating. As has already been said, the fact that Levy felt compelled to stage it is bonkers enough. Maybe though it's quiet a normal thing to do in our post-social media reality...

Anyway, a lot to scrutinise. Makes quite change from the New Manager thread....

Yep. A lot of talk about “acceptance” in the manager thread, but this is the acceptance which I believe is more valid.

I’ve been going to games regularly since the late 80’s and seen some proper shite Spurs teams but I don’t think I’ve felt less enthusiastic about us for a long time. Maybe it’s because I’m older and more cynical now, but feel the last dregs of hope for us to become successful have been finally squeezed out of me.

I’m not going to pretend I know a great deal about Fonseca ( for good or bad), but his record outside of Ukraine doesn’t scream top manager and everything about the appointment screams cheap and on the basis that he’s just happy to be here are put up with the restrictions he needs to work under. That and so many others turned us down or were beyond our means and ambition.

Here’s the sad thing for me though; I feel it ultimately makes fuck all difference. If he’s fighting a losing battle and out of his depth then he’ll pay the price like all the others and we’ll back looking for another manager. And if he turns out to be an really astute appointment and exceeds expectations then he won’t be backed to take us a stage further and kick on anyway and the cycle will just be repeated in a slightly different way.

Everything at Spurs at the moment just seems so bloody futile. At least until ENIC sell up and let someone else have a go *

*and before anyone asks, surprisingly I am actually quite fun at parties ;):D.

That’s what happens when you lose the trust of the fans.
Exactly.

You cant say we are committed to getting success but then in the same moment say you need to be tight with financials.

For years he banged on about the football industry bubble bursting, yet it kinda has and it's made no difference.

Leicester and Villa are continuing to invest and we still say we are broke.

We desperately need someone who will take measured risks.

I get this impression Levy thinks we all sit here demanding 100m players but it's nit true, we want to see smart investment. 4 or 5 worthwhile signings that may make us overspend but at least the team continues to maintain performance.

Just do some financial research, this things aren’t a secret. You will find the answers.

This was the interesting bit to me. He kept stating about the debt, but He chose to spend that much on the training ground and stadium in order to maximise ENICs investment. Yes we needed both of them but did we really need to saddle the club with that much debt?

ENIC should themselves invest in their asset, I’m not even suggesting hundreds of millions, I just want enough to be able to make us competitive again and to keep Kane. Surely we can get enough from the deadwood? Some astute signings and refusing to sell our star players and we can get back to challenging top 4 and concentrate on cups.

I just think with the amount of money they are going to make on us one day they could at least give something back to the club other than debt.

to make us truly competitive you need to spend hundreds of millions. both City and Chelsea since they were taken over have spent 2b, but it doesn't affect their wealth because they deal in oil, and every single day of the year even during the pandemic, someone will purchase oil.

Man U the biggest club in the country has spent 530m over the last 3-4 seasons and haven't won a trophy in that time. we have been competitive in the last 20 seasons we have played 5 League Cup finals, unfortunately only won 1 and the only one team that beat us that's not higher in the money list at the moment was Blackburn. we have also been in numerous FA Cup S/F but have blown it, and of course 1 final of the CL, yet again we blew it.

to get success you need to spend loads (no figure can guarantee it) and most of the comps wouldn't cover the debt. You also need the income which we haven't really had since the new stadium opened, well not enough to spend silly and cover the losses from the pandemic. I don't think he will spend big this summer because all those season tickets sold might have to be refunded if we have a 3rd or 4th wave.

You also need a good youth structure, but unfortunately the wages City and Chelsea pay it's a case of getting lucky. Then you need that special manager, definitely not a help with ENIC in charge, but also because managers want to go to the biggest clubs, and that means we have to find the 9th best manager, unless there is one twiddling their thumbs Conte! with whats happened there is no way we could feed Conte what he needs
