And while we're at it, here's the thread for centre-backs. This time 10 please (as there are generally two of them) in order of preference.

Based on this season performances in the Prem
1) Rio (just because he has done a King at times where he has come and played well despite being injured)
2) Lescott
3) Caulker
4) Jagielka
5) Smalling
6) Cahill
7) Shawcross
8) Terry
9) Taylor
10) Dawson

Jones has been dropped for united as a CB for Smalling and Evans so I cant have him in the list

Purposely didn't include King by the way, because I do believe his playing days may be over. :(

Just on Caulker I think its harder to play in a defence that is very open with a manager who likes his CB's to get wide (I think he said as wide as the box) and then its even harder if your other CB goes on suicidal runs often

Also surprised by the fact the 5th choice CB at united is higher than the 4th choice and in one case the 2nd choice CBs

Based on this season:

1) John Terry
2) Joleon Lescott
3) Garry Cahill
4) Rio Ferdinand
5) Steven Caulker
6) Chris Smalling
7) Phil Jagielka
8) Ryan Shawcross
9) Steven Taylor
10) Michael Dawson

Phil Jones is not that good a CB atm! For United he's been poor there. He plays much better at CM or even RB. I don't know how so many of you have put him up so high on the list?!

Also, King isn't pickable due to his January niggle needing to be sorted out before he returns to being a high-quality CB. In a hypothetical scenario that he got over the niggle and returned to his form pre-Christmas I'd definitely put him in the top 10. He's not finished.

Does anyone else agree, that one tackle on ramsey seems to stained Shawcross's career

You may be right. Shawcross was excellent last season. He and Crouch and, to a lesser extent, Whitehead really held Stoke together at times.

Terry shouldn't be near the top 3/4. He had too many bad games this season. Good CB, but also a ****. Seen him slip far too much on his arse in the PL this season to be considered top 3. And he's a ****.

Really difficult category for me because all of the well established central defenders are in decline, the younger ones that have talent haven't had enough of a chance to develop and prove themselves and the others are there because there is nobody else and they aren't anything special. Do you go with ability, talent, reputation? Anyway I am going to go with who I would have liked to have seen picked for the Euro's and ability.

1) Joleon Lescott
2) Gary Cahill
3) Rio Ferdinand
4) Phil Jagielka
5) Steven Caulker
6) Chris Smalling
7) Phil Jones
8) John Terry
9) Michael Dawson
10) Steven Taylor

You see the issue. Lescott, Cahill and Jagielka are all pretty average defenders. None of them are really much better than Dawson but they are fitter and have played more recently. Rio should be at the Euros ahead of John Terry who hasn't had a good season and just throwing yourself in front of the ball and acting like a Billy big bollocks doesn't make a good footballer to me. Then there are the younger guys in the middle of the pack. Caulker is the biggest talent of the three and has had the best season this year by a distance.

Don't agree with your analysis on Lescott, Cahill and Jags as I think they are very, very good. But otherwise, that's about my list. Probably swap Caulks and Smalling, then Shawcross 9 and possibly Tomkins just ahead of Dawson in 10. Yes, really.

Not sure of the logic on Tomkins. Dawson has not played that much in the last year or so, and consequently difficult to rate in some respects but arguably was a more effective John Terry like CB than John Terry at defending. Tomkins has looked good in a pretty naff West Ham Championship defence, and so outside the top 10 CB's (thank god).

I blame my bad morning. Clearly they aren't average that is harsh. I think that what I meant was that they aren't really top drawer defenders and don't have the talent to ever be world class. But it is harsh because they are compared to Ledley, Rio in his prime and even John Terry when he was a key member of Chelsea's title winning sides. I stick by Caulker over Smalling though, he is a better player and had a better season.

I'm certain if Dawson had been fit in the last year I'd have rated him far higher. Tomkins has been top class in Europe's most competitive league. Admittedly the quality isn't always the highest but it's the highest risk position on the pitch and he has played way better than his age should suggest.

Still wouldn't swap him for either Dawson or Caulker, obviously, but he's a fine player and I suspect in 12 months he'll be "worth" at least 10m.
