Is that a joke? Rio is blatantly the best English defender. The only players that come close are King and Woodgate, yet they have had too many injury problems to actually be considered. Carragher is what Michael Dawson will be in a few years, heart on sleeve but really not top quality (John Terry falls into this category as well).

Nope not a joke. And you are obviously mad!
Rio................oh my god

gotta be gerrard out of those but tbh im not sure any of the 4 even deserve to be in the england starting 11 at the moment

terry looked so out of shape today against the scum it was ridiculous and he isnt a captain to be proud of

thing is those 4 seem to go missing in big games for england other than the exception probably being beckham

I'll name two. :)

Wow, you're utterly clueless.

Paul,

Take it from me son, Rio is the best defender in the world at the moment.

Lots of love

Quite clearly a man who knows his football. Football knowledge on here is like trying to find water in the desert.

Not even best CB at UTD

You're talking out your arse and I'd like you to stop. Vidic is like a lost sheep when Rio isn't beside him. You obviously like your defenders to 'get stuck in' and 'wear their heart on their sleeve'. Like em to stick their head where it hurts, eh? Super John Terry taking one for the team must really impress you. It's fans like you who ensure England have a crap football team because you incapable of realising true talent instead of guts and bravery.

Unlike Carragher, Ferdinand doesn't need to lunge into last ditch tackles and slide around on the floor desperately. He's too good for that - he simply keeps the game in front of him and cleans up any danger with astonishing ease. He gets stick because he has an unfair reputation for losing concentration which he has pretty much cut out his game anyway. If you think there's a better central defender in world football right now then I have no choice but to question your sanity.

True that. River is head and shoulders above anyone else around at the moment.

Over their careers, I like King more and Woodgate might be an ideal foil for River over the next few years, but he is quite simply superb right now. And he has been for some time.

Regarding the captaincy, I'd give this game to Beckham and then send him out to pasture. During which time, I would employ a Mongolian hit-squad to knee-cap John Terry. That leaves you Stevie Gee, who you'd have to turn into the lynchpin of a 5-man midfield. Not the worst idea, but rather a sad indictment of English football.

any of the 4??! Rio is playing at a consistently high level atm, could even be labelled as best CB in the world currently. From press reports it seems that JT is going to be made skipper again which i think is a big shame. He was captain of the sinking ship that was our Euro 08 qualifying campaign after all

Gerrard. A proper captain who has demonstrated repeatedly that he can single-handedly drag an underperforming team through game after game and over the finishing line to win trophies. Also the most complete midfielder England has.

Realistically, Gerrard.

Terry is a nasty thug and Rio.... Just no.

If he was going to play regularly, I'd say Becks hands down, he was always an excellent captain. I was proud to see him lead my country out - not so John Terry.

Ferdinand is a top choice.

he isn't even the best CB at United though.

I gave Rio my vote and boom look who is skipper. He should be the untouchable CB for England, and on current form Woody should be his partner no question about it

Not sure about that, Woody is playing well, but he's playing with a bunch of hacks that are still continuing to leak goals

I realy think the appointment for Ferdinand opens the door for Woodgate to cement a place alongside him as Terry is no longer undroppable.
