I think we are doing the best we can in difficult situations -
We seem to be offering longer contracts of 5/6 years which might at least ensure that we can keep these players together for at least 3 years.
The problem in the past has been that our best players usually give us two seasons to be successful/qualify for Champions League and if we don't,they move on to top 4 clubs if they can!
Berbatov wanted to leave when Jol was manager and we pressured him to stay another season. No way would he have stayed this season.
As for Carrick the management team made the wrong call in not extending his contract before he went to the World Cup with England - He was tapped up by the United players in the England squad under Fergies instructions and that was that!

fair enough james :)

now I'm honestly not trying to catch you out - I respect you've given me a fair answer

but some obvious questions arise (and would probably arise if any of us had a go at setting 'imaginary contracts' on here)

given there's a strong rumour that HR thinks CC is his No.1 - would Gomes (agent) accept a £25m buy out clause - might he not say - well I'd like my no. 1 place back for starters - and actually you know I'm not too happy having been put on the bench so I'm not sure if I'm in a very co-operative mood these days?

extended periods of bench duty have their own implications in my contracts, for starters the GOclause is at least halved. and anyways, like you said , no one would sign such a contract if they are currently on the bench :)

From a moral perspective, everyone should have the right to choose who they work for. Employers choose who to hire but they can't retain people by will/force. If someone decides to leave, he leaves. That's it. The money is a side issue and merely compensation. This applies to bankers, consultants, politicians, anyone in any industry. Football should be no different.

Therefore the whole argument about letting Berbatov/other player rot in the reserves etc is simply IMMORAL because it's threat/coercion. It's wrong. It's bad for both parties.

So be careful when looking on Monster.com while at work or you could find yourself stuck in the same office cleaning the toilets for the next two years. That's the point you were making, right?

What point are you trying to make?

This argument is not to be sniffed at. At the end of the day none of us would appreciate being told by an employer "there's absoloutely no way you are leaving this company for at least two years" despite being unhappy and a rival company offering you double your salary and better working conditions.

It was one of the reasons that our failure to hit the CL in 2005-6 was so devistating. That could have been a turning point. Unlike Everton, we had the funds and wherewithall to capitalise on the situation. Could have attracted a couple of decent players and maybe kicked on.

Personally I think definately needs to take a stance this summer. However immoral that may be. We have the makings of a really good team at the moment and having written off this season, if we can survive, then next season I feel as long as we can keep this bunch together, with a couple of tweeks we will be a bit fucking tasty.

Maybe the only good by-product of this awful season is that due to our players underperforming most champions league clubs will leave us be this summer, meaning we can have a settled pre-season with a few quality additions.

I think it depends on the player in question, his attidude and the way he would react to the situation.

Berbatov for example was a right **** about it, and put us in an dodgy situation. Whilst Barry who was desperate to leave, carried on to play for villa, kept his head down and gave the team 200% every time he put on the shirt, even while his move to Liverpool was pending.
