Old news, rehashed shite, he did it for his own good and it worked out as well as it could've.

Remember this and Southgate was fine with it. He was playing at Right Back for us (and/or the U21's) and wanted to get into the Spurs team at CB so chose to stay to show the gaffer what he could do there...

Now he's a CM so it's all irrelevant.

He is Dier our next skipper and could be England's next skipper too

TBH, I'd be happy if all the Spurs players turned down an England call up. No potential injury issues and they'll probably learn more and be with better players at Hotspur Way than with the national team.

I remembered this incident, but realised my memory wasn't clear about what Southgate said about it at the time:

Googling it brought up some tabloid interpretations of words taken out of context (like the above mail article).

Then I found it on the independent which gave extended quotes:

“We had quite a mature conversation about it,” Southgate said. “There are parts of his game he wants to work on and long term we both agree he’ll probably end up a centre-back. He wants to work on establishing himself at Tottenham as a centre-back.

“Longer term, that’s where he feels he’s going to be strongest. And, without wishing Mauricio [Pochettino] a problem, I think I agree with that.”

Southgate said there will be no black mark against the 20-year-old. “It was quite refreshing actually,” he said. “It’s unusual. You don’t get many players who say I know what I need to go away and work at.

“I’ve had other scenarios where people have elected not to come. And they’re not here. But this is different. I’m totally comfortable with this.”
