Fuck sake - awful news. He was an idol of mine growing up and I just loved him as a player. Such an incredible talent and probably only Messi in my eyes is above him. Gutted.

Being too young to have ever seen him in his prime, I always enjoy watching clips of him play. RIP Diego.
Saw him play at Wembley in 1980, can’t remember much about the game except we won & we went away very impressed with his ability.

In my opinion the greatest player ever to grace a football pitch after Moussa Saib. RIP

Anyone who hasn’t seen it should see out the official fifa film of the 86 World Cup Finals called “Hero - the story of the 1986 World Cup Finals”. Based all around Maradona and the competition. A great film (and narrated by Michael Caine).

Weirdly I’ve never forgotten this great bit of commentary.

The greatest ever. Above Ronaldo, Messi not even Pele won the World Cup with as much influence as he did.

Argentina wouldn't even have made it through their group in 86 without him. With him they won the whole thing.

Definitely cracking out last year's Maradona documentary tonight. For no particular reason I hadn't watched it yet but it has to be seen now.

Well worth watching this video of him warming up before a European semi final. The talent is ridiculous. Like the ball is part of him.

Rinsed my VHS as a kid. The close-up shots, the music - beautiful! It's the best football-related video I've ever had.

This is what my copy looked like:

They used Bryon Butler's radio commentary, which is great. "And that's why Maradona's the greatest player in the world."

Here's the full video, but with Portuguese narration:

I’ve still got the tape!

Remember buying it in Brent Cross shopping centre as a kid.

I thought I'd post some messages from the Napoli forums. (translated of course)

Football died today.

When you thought this shitty year couldn't do any worse, it manages to surprise you. Goodbye Diego, thank you for what you did and, above all, for being there. From today we are all a little less fans of this sport.

AdD10s

Speechless ... He left so suddenly ... He went back with the other Gods up there. Rest in peace Human Dios what you did will never be forgotten.

Goodbye Diego, I find it hard to accept that you are no longer there, I hope it is just a bad dream, you are and will remain the best of all times and not only for what you have done for our city, descansa en paz Pibe ... .: cry:

The one who made me fall in love with football as a child died. I can't express what I'm feeling right now, it hurts too much.

A person can die, but MARADONA will never die! Thanks for everything Diego 2020 is really giving it all ... eccheccazz ...

One of the saddest days of my life. . Diego Maradona will always be in my heart. . For all life. . . I love you Diego. .

Mammamia what a pain ... a part of my life that goes away, like a sudden stroke of a unique and absolute champion. The greatest ever. Diego, you take the greatest piece of my football youth with you, you take half of the heart of Naples with you. Look at us from above and always cheer for us!

I think the time has come to change the name of the San Paolo.
(that's the Naples Stadium not the City)

Argentina and Naples mourn their son, football loses the greatest ever RIP D10S

The only consolation is that those who have seen him play (including myself) are a little less sad. Goodbye great champion.

Echecazz ... I was trying to take it with philosophy, but then my wife arrives, not Neapolitan neither by birth nor by football faith, who hugs me to offer me condolences ..
this one has me in tears

Not even in 100 lives does a person condense what he has lived! I really hope that now he can find all the serenity he deserves!

The myth never dies, it will live forever in the dreams and hearts of all football fans

Football loses the only true genius, I am very sad. A 2020 to forget ...

he greatest ever He was able to win games on his own He was able to win 2 league titles in Naples He was able to win a world championship on his own He was capable of everything on the pitch and unfortunately also off If I lived a happy adolescence I owe it to you too I can't forget how much joy you gave me when you took the field Like a modern Masaniello you made all the Neapolitan people raise their heads and fought against the power of the north Thank you only great hero RIP

All of Naples is crying tonight. But memory is greater and more lasting than death. Naples will continue to remember and love its unique D10s THANKS FOR EVERYTHING. HELLO DIEGO

It was really interesting. Even though he didn't look in the best of health, he was still full of energy.
