RIP Diego

was at Wembley when England beat them either 3-0 or 3-1 in a friendly and will never forget him trapping the ball at knee high level.

Watched this last month. Pretty much based around his time in Naples. Incredible stuff in every sense.

Rest in peace to the finest player I have ever seen - His troubles and lifestyle were well documented, let's hope he finds some peace in "the hand of God".

A colossus. A genius. An icon. The beautiful game has lost its greatest artist.

Here’s the greatest goal of all time accompanied by the great piece of commentary of all time.

I've mentioned this story before, but can't remember the details as to When/where it happened. it was my elder brother and he has since passed away but he used to tell me it in Awe.

He was at game, and he went early because it was Maradona playing. In the warm up, his team mates moved to one side to get warmed up and Maradona was 20-30 yards out from the goal. He shot, hit the crossbar and the ball bounced away. The fans jeered at him, "You're shit". He hit the next ball and hit the crossbar...."You're Shit Diego". He hit the next shot, hit the Crossbar...."AHHH You're shit".... and thinking, "Did he, Did he just...?" . He hits the next one and it goes into the back of the net, The fans have now realised that he'd been playing them and jeer because me missed the Crossbar. He waves and turns into the tunnel to a standing ovation (no one sat in them days)..

Anyone who hasn’t seen it should see out the official fifa film of the 86 World Cup Finals called “Hero - the story of the 1986 World Cup Finals”. Based all around Maradona and the competition. A great film (and narrated by Michael Caine).

Weirdly I’ve never forgotten this great bit of commentary.

Thanks for posting this. This is one of my favourite commentary moments and have only ever heard it on an old BBC VHS called 'Worlds greatest goals from Charlton to Maradona.'

Greatest player I've seen, and was fortunate enough to see him play at WHL in Ardiles testimonial. I know he splits opinion due the hand of god goal, but the referee and linesman could have easily disallowed this, so they were also at fault, along with that lumbering twat Shilton, who should never had been out jumped by someone who is just over 5 feet tall..

The weird thing looking back is how little we saw of his career. World Cups and the odd friendly. Seven games in 86 and 90 and four in 82 and 94. And that was it. No Spanish football, no Italian football. You'd see him every four years and barely hear of him in between. But no one seriously doubted he was the best ever* after 86.

Anyway, the first thing I ever saw on youtube was when a mate sent me this in feb 2006. Only a paltry 6 million views so maybe people haven't seen it here either

*OK, maybe Pele too, but no one was better than Diego

I was a Spurs fan from the age of 6, but didn't really take active interest in watching football on TV, maybe the off highlights on MOTD or Big Match. I do remember staying up late for the '78 World Cup when I became a huge fan or Argentina. I just fell in live with the spectacle of the tournament. Didn't really see beyond Mario Kempes but it was enough to make Argentine my favourites. Then of course, Ossie and Ricky joined and the love affair grew, And then along comes Diego, WHAT A PLAYER.

Someone said the best ever World Cup is the one closest to your tenth birthday. I was 9 for 1978 and I wouldn't argue with that.

Kempes once had a trial with us in his latter years. I remember the Rous Cup being on and England were playing Brazil. Commentators were linking us with signing Maradona during the game.

The things you remember..

Mexico 86 was the first real tournament I remember. Diego was the absolute star. I wouldn’t even dream of being him in the playground, he was an untouchable talent. As one of the few round these parts who loved both goals against England I enjoyed how he didn’t give a shit about his controversies. Lived life to the fullest and then some. As the saying goes, he left everything on the pitch. RIP.

As someone who was too young to watch him play, all I grew up seeing were the negative headlines he has had in his post-career life. I'm surprised by all the warm wishes, stories and love being sent his way, especially from news outlets that seemed to be so negative towards him recently.

Apparently there is another side of the man that I never heard about. I might have to do some more research on him tonight.
