Can somebody tell me what this chant achieves exactly, other than show how obsessed by our inferiority complex we are? It makes me cringe.

Back when the gooners were regularly winning trophies and we were struggling to finish in the top half I actually used to find it both flattering and pathetic when they still sang songs about us. Flattering because if we were in that position I'd be well beyond caring about our rivals enough to pay them lip service, and pathetic for the same reason.
