Why not? Scotland was a force once, before they became a farce. Hungary was once the world's best team. England is a good team, but not great.

Because your argument is banking on two hypothetical situations, US actually realising their potential and England not pulling their finger out of their arse.

I'd look to have CCV on the bench on Saturday and if we can get 2 or 3 ahead then bring him on.

Debut out the way in a non-pressure away game and a chance to evaluate him against men rather than boys.

Sure, but I do well on long term bets. Short term, not at all, but trends matter and I am not all impressed by the FA for instance (same in Norway). The Americans with their numbers, their general competetivness and free mindset will help. What they are probably missing are academies like the one at Spurs, but on the other hand, they don't have a local league dominated by foreign players.

Scotland have greatly suffered from the influx of money into football. As for Hungary, that was a rather unique and very unfortunate situation - their whole team had to essentially flee the country due to war and their development was stopped in its tracks.

By that definition China should be doing well. They're dogshit.
If they had a large pool of active young players and a way for them to go pro, but think of Korea and Japan. Son is better than Townsend, for instance. So they may make it, but later I think.

I though the reason Scotland were struggling were a combination of global catch up, combined with a small base and a change in lifestyle, with things like Xbox, Playstation and fried Mars bars?

Nah... Not only I am part Scottish (way back), but when I look at the parks in Norway, it seems like it's mostly immigrant kids are playing football and basketball, unlike when I grew up. Those who practice sports do it with their parents driving them to organized practice. That is not enough, but I think Scotland is even worse, because Scotland in comparision tends to do very poorly in some areas and statistics (Health). Glaswegians tend to die earlier than they should, for instance. I can probably find some numbers...

I was thinking... When defenders get their debuts, do they start or get on as subs? I am not sure what's best...

From what I've seen, which has only been a couple of games he looks no where near ready to play first team football. But hey, I like Poch's youth policy, and if he wants for give him a game I'm all for promoting the youth rather than signing another Fazio

I think you overestimate the pull of Football in America, to me more kids want to play in the NFL, NBA, MLB and the NHL then the MLS. It is growing but the top athletes/talents probably won't pick football.

3 million kids today and it's growing. Baseball (MLB) is past it. Hockey is played in a freezer or in the north in winter. The NFL with all it's injuries, I honestly think it has peaked, and basketball, which I love just as much a football, is at the highest level not really open for people under 1.90 meter or 6 foot 3. I am close to 6 feet, 6 inches myself, but not nearly athletic (or skilled) enough.

Hungray of the 1950's is the best international team that Europes's ever produced. Such a shame Politics didn't let it continue.

So no game for Carter-Vickers today against Colchester.
Maybe he'd be better of getting a loan out, even if we have to loan in a replacement (or use Veljkovic for cover untill summer).
A season in MLS could perhaps be useful, he'd grow as a person like Grant Ward and SImon Dawkins did.
And it wouldn't surprise me if CCV was a full US international at the end of it.

until an "average everyday" american really makes it in a top european side it will always be easier for kids to make it in all other sports, and for basketball, and the nfl they definitely take the best athletes from the pool, that's more the point than the numbers of kids. There are estimates out there that say in the next 30 years there won't be an nfl, but until then they will always get their talent. It's still a lot easier for Americans to turn professional and make good money in hockey then football and still 72% of big leaguers (baseball players) are American. The MLS is still a niche market and all my soccer following friends just follow clubs in europe and don't give a shit about the MLS.

You know, I do a lot of betting and I read books on forecasting. To place great faith in obstacles that can easily be worked around, is a bad idea. Basically, as you are pointing out, there is popular interest in watching world class football and there are millions of kids playing today. Some will make it, the same way rain in the mountains will make it to the sea. A river will be made.

I don't think an MLS loan would do him any good right now, it's not an easy league for a kid to just settle into and succeed. Not many young guys (U21) get into teams here.
