What I don't get is people being dismissive of him scoring goals because he was at Charlton? So what, it doesn't matter what team he played for in the prem, he scored lots of goals two years in a row against premiership teams having the same opportunities as any other striker in the league, scoring goals against premiership defences is scoring goals and it doesn't matter which side your in. Bent is a proven premiership goalscorer, time will tell if he can do it for us, but time is the important word, give him time before you stick the knife in.

Ok, so he needs a good run in the side - at the expense of our league position or the Waffa cup?

The only way i can see Bent salvaging his career at Spurs is that either a) We adapt our play style to suit him, tell Berbatov and Keane to let Bent run the show up front, pair him off and resolutely keep sending the ball down, time after time, until eventually Bent might click with one of them, or b) Drop him to the ressies til the end of this season then let him get his run in the team during friendlies or whatever we do in the off season.

Personally, no matter how much i'd like the lad to start scoring, i don't want to risk a single result between now and May.

Robbo won't be going anywhere and his dip in form was just that. He was recalled, even though Cerny had made only one noteable ricket, and had a great game, bar one ricket.

He's got quite a few years as a keeper left, he's not even 30 yet, and has already stood up to the most pressure he will likely ever face as a keeper for his country and his club.

The fact so many of you can calmly say he's shit all of a sudden and to get rid of him makes me laugh.

Once again; it starts with an F, ends in an ICKLE.

Hope none of you treat your "mates" like this.

so he should play then?

That second one was taken a little out of context - you danes are all the same

That second one was whether we should sell Robbo or not - i've stood by both and said that dips in form happen but, at this moment in time, I'm concerned about both of their confidence and form, less so Robbo - he wasn't as bad as the scoreline suggested at Brum, but Bent is so off form it's a tragedy and i don't think he's got the strength of character to push through, like i think Robbo has.

Bent's not fitted in so i also question what's going on in the coaching sessions that mean Bent hears one thing, everyone else hears another

Is he getting on with the squad? What's he like with them off the pitch? I have no idea, but currently he doesn't fit our style AND he's off form.

Bummer of a combination, but all he can do is work at it.

When Bent has played he hasn't had the service.

When he's played with Berbatov & done shit Berbarov has too.

When he's played with Keane & done shit, Keane has too.

When he's played in the team when they're in full flow & playing well he's scored....

Well, aside from that all reports suggest Bent accepted lower wages to play for us than what he would've got at West Ham...

I'd be willing to bet it's not true.

Bent's got good physique he just needs skill and confidence. Ramos could give him skills and goals give him confidence. We just need to stick to him.

I JUST WANT HIM TO SHOW US A FLASH OF GOOD PLAY. JUST A GLIMPSE OF SOMETHING SPECIAL. FUCK IT, NOT EVEN SPECIAL, JUST ANYTHING VAGUELY DECENT IN FOOTBALLING TERMS.

Time. Something every footballer needs. Which is exactly what a lot of Spurs fans are not prepared to give him. (Me not included). Have to say, though, apart from a couple of goals for us, he hasn't impressed me at all. He's obviously a good 'striker,' but, in my opinion, he isn't a very good 'footballer.'

Like I said, we need to give him more time, it would be stupid not to.

But there's a difference. In his first season (or more correctly his first two half-seasons) JD was a very effective striker indeed. Most people, me included, thought he was the real deal. And then the goals dried up in the latter half of 2004-2005, and in 2005-2006 he was very poor indeed overall, whether he was a starter or coming on as a sub. Sure, there were some flashes of brilliance, but a lot of the time he would just disappear. He was quite as ineffectual as Bent has been so far—but because of what he delivered in 2004 we knew what he could do for us and were prepared to be patient. Last season we saw far more effort.

I wouldn't disagree in the slightest that Bent has been a major disappointment. There are all manner of reasons why this has been so, however, not least the price tag, which is in no way his fault. If people want to analyse his failings in an intelligent fashion, that's fine; if 'opinions' consist of 'he's shit' or similar infantile one-liners I'll treat them with the contempt they deserve, because they're not opinions at all, in my book. Everyone's pissed off with the way this season's panned out, everyone's pissed off about Saturday, so it has to be someone's fault; this week, it appears to be Bent's. I don't fully understand this, as, whilst he was poor, it wasn't down to him that the Brummies were able to swan through our defence at will. Shouldn't we be slagging off Kaboul or Chimbonda?

*Edit: the post I was replying to has just vanished!*

I think a lot of Bents problems lie with the Berba/Keane partnership. Lets be honest here, he's never going to get in ahead of those two if everyone is fit. Maybe sporadically, but he'll get no where near enough time for him to get any sort of rhythm going.

Both Berba and Keane are better footballers than Bent, and we are a much better team when they are on the pitch. It was never going to be easy for Bent. It was the same problem for Defoe, too.

the question is how long do you give him? obviously less than one whole season isnt enough time to write him off, and i havnt yet, but one more like this with no sign of improvement will be the end of him.

when benjani first came to the prem, he couldnt score for shit, but he was getting chances, getting in goalscoring positions and generally creating stuff for himself.

adel tarabt, clearly not ready for first team duty on a regular, reliable basis, but he's showed us of things to come, things he can do that need honing and developing.

the problem for me is what excuse does bent have? it was his decision to come to spurs, he believed he could fit in to the team/squad, and if its now clear that he cant, then that's his fault, there were other clubs after him but he chose spurs. and if its just bad form, lack of confidence, then its up to him to be strong and rectify it, and if he cant then again it his fault.

maybe it was having to up sticks and move from london to london that has made him go from a pro footballer to someone who models the spurs kit occasionaly on saturday afternoon

finding a partnership up front is hard enough.

but getting three very different strikers to work together has got to be very tough.

i believe db will come good. you dont become a bad player over night. being at the same club for years has done wonders for keano. lets hope the same can happen with bent

Everyone's pissed off with the way this season's panned out,

hi 57 - I'm not at all pissed off with the way this season has panned - I am extremely joyful - it's been our best season (so far) since 1991 - and has transfprmed this decade from a barren one to our sixth successive trophy winning decade (matched only by Man U)

win the uEFA and it's our best season since 82 for sure - and maybe since the 60s

I know it was only pre season but he looked so good then. The problem began when his name wasn't in the starting line up for Sunderland. I think he then realised he wasn't Jols signing. He got a lift when Ramos joined but Berbatov and Keane are just too good. I don't think he realised just how ood they are. If he did I dont think he would have joined us

Another problem is I don't think he has had much experience in a partnership at the highest level and its evident from the games he has played so far that his link up play is severly lacking. All this talk of was he or wasn't he Jols signing has severly affected his confidence. He knows however well he plays and however well he trains he just won't be able to replace berbatov and keane who have scored over 80 golas and created over 50 since the start of last season

he is clearly not going to break that partnership up with the form they're in. who could? but in the modern game its not about 11 players anymore. All it would take would be an injury or ban or even a loss of form and he's got his chance.
