...and I doth my cap to him.

When I was a kid he was a bit of a hero to me when he first came on the scene. I remember thinking him and Robbie Fowler would go on to be the no. 9 and 10 for England for years.

I guess he'll always be remembered for his role in the Ardiles 'famous five'. Such a shame he never managed to have the career his early talent suggested.

For me he represents my early infatuation with Spurs...the potential...the excitement...the skill, and he'll alwasy be a bit of a hero to me.

Hope his managing goes well.
I wonder how much that England under 19 competition really messed him up.He was doing well with us in'93 then had to go to Australia for some stupid competition. it seemed to take it out of him but he got his areer back on track at Everton.

I heard he was manager of Hull but did not realise he was still playing. he was an excellent player and I think very underrated, I wish he had played a bit longer for us.

Yeah I remember that. It was shin splints, or something like that wasn't it?

He was definitely my favourite player at Spurs when he was there. Just slightly ahead of Klinsmann.

Echo this, he was a bit of a hero when I was a little kid just getting into the game as well. It was Barmby and Klinsmann more so than any other players that did it for me. I remember I cried the day my dad told me he'd left the club.

At least I got to see him in action once, although that was the disasterous 1-0 defeat to Hull in the darkest of the Ramos days.

Best of luck to him in management. Hull seem to be doing quite well at the moment.

I didnt see that much of him, remember him but I was young and he got sold just as I was really getting into footy.

Seems to have started well in management at Hull, best of luck to him.

Had no choice but to sell him, he was homesick if I remember rightly.

Yeah he was. He just wanted to get closer to Hull as he missed his mum (I think).

Considering he's now their manager I'd say things have worked out pretty well for him.

If I remember rightly he got married to an older woman who then wanted him to move up north. That's when he left us.

So kids, let that be a lesson...

I remember him saying that he couldn't turn down the opportunity to work under Bryan Robson, or something along those lines.

I was gutted when he left.

I was also gutted when he became number 7 for us, as I had Barmby 8 on my Spurs kit (my very first Spurs shirt). He was my first favourite player when I was a kid. So talented, some of the things he did when I watch back highlights of that era were brilliant, so much vision and intelligence. This guy could've been the England great of his generation, he certainly had no less ability than either Beckham or Scholes.

I was at WHL when he scored a lovely header in this game:-

I remember his parents being furious when he left us for Boro... Such a shame.

Always liked him, was a shame when he moved. Good player and hopefully he has a good career as a manager.

Was sad when he left, always thought he was a top player and model pro. Hope he goes on to have a successful career in management.

I loved him while he was here.
But I tainted it for me when he signed for Everton and said something like "I've always wanted to play for a big club"
