Barcelona were preparing to make a move for Gareth Bale before being persuaded that he wasn't ready to leave Tottenham by his agent, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.

Bale joined Real Madrid over the summer for a world record £86 million fee, but it could have all been very different had Barcelona followed through with their interest in the Welshman.

According to Sport, Barcelona were finalising an offer worth €60 million last year for the then Spurs star, before his agent convinced them that he wasn't ready to leave White Hart Lane.
Barcelona were in contact with Spurs and the player himself before his agent Jonathan Barnett intervened to keep his client in north London for one more season.

Having been told to they would have first refusal on Bale in two years, Barcelona instead opted to sign Jordi Alba from Valencia while the Tottenham star would go on and complete his big-money move 12 months later.
