Bad memories and perspective- malbranque

I have seen tons of comments about how we could do with a player like malbranque, he has more assists than Modric this season he is more determined than most of our players, he was good for tottenham we should never have got rid of him.

Some people have such short memories, for those that can't remember:-

- Malbranque played on the left hand side of a four man midfield
- He had no pace and rarely tried to beat his player
- He generally kept possession of the ball by mostly taking the player on realising he didn;t have the pace to beat him or the left foot to cross it in so he promptly turned back and passed it to a LB or CM.
- He worked hard and provided cover to the left back
- He was outshone by lennon on the other side and was frequently targeted as the weakest link in the midfield.

On this site and fans who watched at the time was criticised for not being capable of taking us to the next level and certainly would not get into any of the top 4 teams. When he got the ball as a fan did we really expect anything to happen, did we think when the teamsheet was announced oh good Malbranque is playing.

So there are bound to be a few people who genuinely thought Malbranque was a good player, but he was not as a good as what people think he was. Tottenham are a big club there is more pressure in playing for tottenham than there is for Sunderland. So maybe Malbranque is happier there so lets just move on and put his performance for tottenham into perpective and most of all just leave him where he is...

I thought he was our most consistent performer last season....baffled when they let him go....

Without even having a replacement lined up....:duh:

Steeeeeeeed finished 3rd in the SC Player of the Year Awards last season with the top 3 well clear of the rest of the pack. How's that for perspective?

Whilst he may not have been the greatest, we porbably shoudln't have sold him without getting a replacement (and don't say Bentley)

Real team player which is what we have lacked in abundance this season. Steed is also joint top in assists in the EPL with 8.

ravo, i LOVE your sig.

Ha ha, quality isn't it - it's like Wilson is on motion detecting sleep mode, only moving when something gets within 5 yards of him

He is a solid player no doubt, and sometimes you just need solid players to help your team along... Yet you are right he did hold on to possession too long and he couldnt beat a man on the outside, but they are faults any CM would have when being deployed on the wing

Its pretty simple really. You cant have flair players all over the pitch. You need a player like Malbranque too. Especially for tough physical opposition. Utd have players like Fletcher and Park for example. They dont do the things you say like running past players and creating moments of magic etc. But they do the job they're set out to do. And the fact that Malabranque did such an effective job out of his natural position, just shows how good he was for us.

We have replaced him now though, with Palacios. The difference is, he plays in the middle instead. Which is where you need a player like that really. We did have Tainio too before the summer. I always liked him as a holding midfield player. But he never held the position down. Those are the types of player who compliment the likes of Lennon and Modric.

The over-riding memory of Steed was the cute way he'd suddenly stop and run around the ball on the floor like a little puppy.

We haven't got anyone left at the club who does that and I'm sure we all agree we're poorer for it.

Even I had warmed to Malbranque by the end of the season and I started the season as arguably his strongest critic.

Don't get me wrong, he was still continually running into people and running out of touch, but his work-rate, especially defensively, has been very much missed this season.

Love your work.

Must say that I tried to do the clip thing - and couldn't. Then LA Yiddo did it for me... hence the credit I gave him.

I more pissed off we didn't use him properly when we did have him. We should have used him in the Scholes mode, and not had him playing all over the place as a stop gap player.

Spurs have a horrible habit of playing people out of position, and it costs us points, plus makes decent players like Hossam etc look worse than they are.

Anyway, he is a quality player and is already being missed. You gotta love ole Steed.

I agree. I think Steed would have been great in the middle in place of Zokora. But at least we have Wilson in that role now.
