What position did he play when Jose arrived.
What difference does that make? You're trying to say he's been shoehorned into CB when he was a CB before we bought him, a center back for a while here before he was moved to DM, and has been a CB for his national team.

Fact is he was moved out of DM by Jose because he was awful at the role. Dembele really did mask a lot of his weakness in that area namely his lack of mobility.

Decent enough performance after the last two dire games. Top four still possible but think we would need to remain unbeaten for the rest of the season and win at least six/seven of the remaining nine games.

It's definitely doable. Our toughest game is arguably Leicester away on the last day so hopefully they make it through to the fa cup final and have one eye on that by the time we play them.

Edit: forgot weve United to play too

I agree but to undermine our performance with they were poor is unfair - its was the manner in which we played and the effort put in. We struggled at the back first half but hard work got use through. They messed up in our box but again I felt we stood strong. its not a case of accepting the perforance (because we can play better) its appricating the importance of it. The team played with some passion and that's what footvall is all about.
Add to the fact that a lot of the players are tired from overplaying, I mean Kane and Sanchez had literally just played 120 minutes on Thursday, how can anyone expect more from these players when they are giving their all.

Judging by the ratings that post got I'm not the only one that's thinks so either. Stuff like this is always going to be contentious because what I look for in a player isn't always going to be what you do. Has he made mistakes in that time? Sure but he's also stopped so many opportunities I've lost count. Massive improvement by him since his regular return to the side and it's no surprise to me it's basically become Sanchez plus a.n other.

He's been up there with one of our best players recently (you can probably argue Lucas is better) The thing with Sanchez is that people have already made their own minds up about him it seems and over scrutinise his performances so any mistake he makes justifies their confirmation bias about him completely ignoring the fact that he has played well for majority of matches bar the odd error which sticks out in their minds - Imagine judging players by isolated moments as opposed to overall contribution, I really can't take people seriously when they debate like this tbh.

The facts say it themselves we are defending better since he's come back in, clean sheets are bring kept more consistently and we are looking a bit more confident at the back and can also play a higher line to to his pace and physicality . It's not perfect by any means and he still has flaws in his game but the bottom line is he is improving and we look better at the back.

I dont think anybody could be more happy that we won than I am . I also think Villa were dire but to my amateur observation the defence was better with Rodon and Tanganga . But overall it was still a disjointed performance relying almost solely on Kane his thru pass to Moura and his penalty . That may sound bad or stupid on my part but nevertheless I felt that . I feel bad for saying this but I dont want to fool myself that a victory over a very poor (without Grealish ) Villa team and we are on the up . Having said that if they can start getting some structure and patterns of play then 4th place may not be beyond us .

I dont get the critics today regard Sanches you have to remember that some of the free kicks given away were given only because Mike Dean is an awful ref . At least 3 of the fouls given against Sanches may not have been given with another man refereeing .
I am never happy when Mike Dean refs our matches in the circumstances a good win .

I'm surprised he gave us that penalty. It was exactly the same scenario as v Arsenal when Lacazette kicked Sanchez and fell over in the process though, so I guess there's a bit of karma in there, but nonetheless I'd expect Dean of all people to not give it to us.

I rated Villa more difficult than Dinamo, but they seriously hurt me why we couldn't do to Dinamo what we did yesterday. It was that easy, but...

Attitude and spirit - miles apart in these two game.

Because we had a 2-0 lead going into the Zagreb game and we had to go out and win the Villa game.

Any where on the field if you get yourself or part of your body between the opponent and the ball and he is stupid enough to take you out then its a stonewall penalty . I just dont get the argument on the other hand it is Harry Kane and there seems to be in some quarters a need to bash him whenever they can . For me there have been untold fouls on him that should have been penalties but because of the agenda by the likes of Linekar that seems to be influencing others he will not get them . The most annoying thing is when other players get themselves between the opponent and the ball and are taken down it is seen as clever play by the person getting the penalty or stupidity by the offender .

But from 91st minute on of the 1st ET we are back to square one. So why the lads couldn't score within that 30 minutes like we did yesterday?

Anyway, I'm just feeling hurt the more I think about how we can win things but always shot ourselves in the foot.

Because their goalie was inspired & even when he was beaten their CB’s who were also inspired blocked whatever we through at them.
Having said that their best player, by a country mile, produced 3 moments of magic, our cause not being helped by Doherty for 2 of them & Sissoko for the third.

Don't know what's going on with Neville. He used to make some brilliant points and be a very good co-commentator, always sticking to the task and not letting bias or a narrative get in the way.

I wonder if he's started to get too comfortable and has allowed the 'fan' in him to come out over time without really realising it, as he would have been keen to impress early on. It also probably doesn't help with Tyler rambling and adding little meaningless stats to bait him into commenting.

That Everton game a couple of years ago where the pair of them proceeded to talk about whether Poch would go to United for the entire second half was a disgrace, yet it was Tyler who wouldn't drop it and kept asking him about it.

I also have noticed that since Jose has been at Spurs, he's tended to be more negative about us. I mean when we thrashed them 6-1, he didn't even wanna talk about what we'd done to them or how well we played.

Contrast that to how they talk about Arsenal and them conceding three goals earlier in the day and it is impossible to think about anything but there being an agenda against us when compared to them. If we'd of shipped those three goals they did, they'd be a riot on here. Maybe it is because Sky now see us as a big team and so our level is higher and when we drop below that they criticise. But it doesn't feel like that. Up until yesterday I'd watched the games with the commentary off for the last month and it has been so much better. I think I'll revert to that. Reading the match thread replaces the moaning in the stadium.

I thought this yesterday during the game and it was something Mourinho hammered home in his interviews after the game. Why did we need a poor couple of performances to get us to pull our finger out. It always happens. Manager or players to blame or both. I suspect both.

It annoyed me in commentry when Sanchez 'lost' his man in the first half, almost as if they were after him and that he was a liability before hand. Then completely ignored the fact that the reason the player was able to get in on goal way ahead of him was that he was offside.

I think he has been doing ok, add to the penalty last week where he was trying to block a shot i think some people are a bit harsh on him. Iron out the actual mistakes, which are not as many as people say and he is on the right lines

Great point. After us toiling with 10 men on the Sunday plus Extra Time on Thursday Villa last played on Friday 12th March so they hadn’t had a match for NINE days!

That one was different as both players were kicking so there was an argument that both kicked each other- ergo no penalty. Kane didn’t kick at all, he just got kicked and so definite penalty and correctly awarded IMO.
