I know I moaned about the first half commentary earlier and I’m sure this has already been mentioned, but I just saw that the first half was the first time since 2014 that Villa didn’t have a shot on goal at home.

Whether the defence played ok or not, that stat should make Neville feel thoroughly ashamed of himself if he sees it. Tyler, as usual, played up to Neville by making a joke about our defence in the second half too. I hope they both review their commentary and realise what fucking plonkers they were.

And it doesn’t matter that Grealish wasn’t playing or that Villa had trouble creating, the fact is Grealish hasn’t played every home game for Villa since 2014 and also, we had a young back 4 playing together for the first time. So it was actually decent that not only did we restrict them to zero attempts on goal first half, but that we kept a clean sheet after the 90 too.

Yet if Neville was commentating on that match on the radio, you’d have thought we were 3 or 4 down at half time.

They might not be totally ready right now but I’d like to see Tanganga paired with Rodon at CB. We’ll no doubt buy in the summer, but I hope Tanganga in particular will be our long term CB, even though I really enjoyed his little runs down the wing.

Don't know what's going on with Neville. He used to make some brilliant points and be a very good co-commentator, always sticking to the task and not letting bias or a narrative get in the way.

I wonder if he's started to get too comfortable and has allowed the 'fan' in him to come out over time without really realising it, as he would have been keen to impress early on. It also probably doesn't help with Tyler rambling and adding little meaningless stats to bait him into commenting.

That Everton game a couple of years ago where the pair of them proceeded to talk about whether Poch would go to United for the entire second half was a disgrace, yet it was Tyler who wouldn't drop it and kept asking him about it.

I also have noticed that since Jose has been at Spurs, he's tended to be more negative about us. I mean when we thrashed them 6-1, he didn't even wanna talk about what we'd done to them or how well we played.

A good win.

Pleased we were able to play our game in hand to banish the poor displays earlier this week gone.

Bit of a shame the International break sees us have to wait to hopefully get back on track and build some consistency.

What I like is Harry doing what I hated about Drogba, nicking free kicks, penalties etc, something we have to do. We've been too nice over so many years. Harry has woke up to that and has shown not only is a great player but professional enough to earn us a free kick or penalty or two to gain an extra two points. This guy is world class.

I rated Villa more difficult than Dinamo, but they seriously hurt me why we couldn't do to Dinamo what we did yesterday. It was that easy, but...

Attitude and spirit - miles apart in these two game.

negatives:

sanchez (the bloke is a liability), constantly out of possession, gives away cheap, unnecessary fouls and to think some believe he’s playing well recently is comical.
Stevie B - offered very little going forward and poor decision making in his brief intro.
sissoko - his introduction immediately led us losing our rhythm, possession and I’d rather, despite his industry we play someone who resembles a footballer.
Seems overly harsh tbh.

Sanchez, whilst committing a few unnecessary / stupid fouls in potentially dangerous positions actually played quite well. Not sure if you are looking too much at these events as a form of confirmation bias to not see the good things he did. Some of the tackles he put in were fantastic. No player is going to go a full 90 mins without the odd mistake and unfortunately defenders mistakes usually get highlighted/remembered

I thought Bergwijn played very well when he came on, frequently picking the ball up and running at the Villa defence. Could his decision making be improved, almost certainly but I can't agree that he offered 'very little going forward'

Sissoko didn't really do much wrong, as he didn't have much to do. He was only on the pitch for about 10 mins. Guess he's an easy target though

Amazing to see Sanchez was our senior defender for last nights game. I thought everyone played well and gave all they could give. Once again two players I am not particularly keen on gave top performances. Moura and Sanchez.

They managed to pass the ball around us quite a lot, despite our improved pressing and made some decent openings via good football but just didn't have the quality on the pitch in the final third to take advantage. They really weren't great and we were a bit better. We probably deserved 1-0 and we got the second due to the extremely fortunate penalty. On another day that penalty is not given and Villa could have walked one into the net

Not meant at you in particular but I really worry that our expectations have dropped so much that we are happy about today
I agree but to undermine our performance with they were poor is unfair - its was the manner in which we played and the effort put in. We struggled at the back first half but hard work got use through. They messed up in our box but again I felt we stood strong. its not a case of accepting the perforance (because we can play better) its appricating the importance of it. The team played with some passion and that's what footvall is all about.

I am literally speechless.
Judging by the ratings that post got I'm not the only one that's thinks so either. Stuff like this is always going to be contentious because what I look for in a player isn't always going to be what you do. Has he made mistakes in that time? Sure but he's also stopped so many opportunities I've lost count. Massive improvement by him since his regular return to the side and it's no surprise to me it's basically become Sanchez plus a.n other.
