The life of a Spurs fan March 10 2008

The typical highs and lows of being a Tottenham Hotspur fan have never been more perfectly demonstrated than in the last couple of weeks.

Last week's home defeat to PSV was a big disappointment, but in many ways characterised our season. Spurs were brutally punished for another individual error.
It was a gamble to play Gilberto and one that certainly backfired. He had not played a competitive match since the 16th of December and it showed - the Brazilian clearly lacked match sharpness. He looked good technically, especially in attacking areas, but a man of his experience should have known better than to try and take on Eindhoven's best player - Jefferson Farfan.

Too often have the boys from N17 shot themselves in the foot and against a side well drilled in the art of playing away from home in Europe. They were not going to waste such a gift. The defensive problems have been obvious and well documented and could easily be filed under: set pieces, mistakes and wonder goals.

After that mistake the home side tried to force the issue but it was a disjointed display which played into the Dutch side's hands. The Lilywhites lacked invention and incision which was ably supplied by Ibrahim Afellay for the Eredivisie leaders.
Next week in Holland could be an abrupt end to our season.
However, the last ten days have been classic Spurs. After a wonderful team performance and victory over our London rivals in the League Cup Final, we then capitulate away against a team scrapping for points at the bottom of the table.

Beating Chelsea at Wembley was a magnificent achievement and the best day of my life without question. I was one of the lucky ones with the privilege of being at the stadium.
Therefore it seemed ridiculous that I was watching supposedly the same club two weeks ago at St Andrews. In my opinion it was our worst performance of the season, against very mediocre opposition. It was clear from the outset that Birmingham wanted the points more and they took full advantage of a woeful defensive display which completely lacked leadership and organisation. The goals conceded were embarrassing.

Spurs supporters will not accept our league form evaporating in the wake of our League Cup success and continued involvement in the UEFA Cup.
We were missing King, Woodgate and Dawson who are vital to our progression and any team would miss defenders of their calibre, but the starting XI fielded against the Blues was good enough to compete. It has been obvious all season that when Tottenham defend well, it gives the attacking players a platform to go and win games.

But whatever happens from now until May we have won some silverware to commemorate our 125-year anniversary and proved that we can compete with the best sides.
With the improvements made under Juande Ramos, Spurs fans can look forward to the next campaign with renewed hope and optimism (providing we don't start the 2008/09 season in the same vein that lost Martin Jol his job).

We should be fully equipped to challenge for fourth spot and more trophies. However, we must learn to win when we are not at our best and become more resilient and harder to beat.
The most encouraging thing is that we will have an opportunity to win the UEFA Cup next season, if we do not turn things around at the Philips Stadion next Wednesday, and I for one believe we can.

Seems to go but, however, but, however, but however, but

Dare I say every goal could be classified under set pieces, mistakes and wonder goals.

He's not left a lot else really? Flukes, I suppose - like Pennant's at the weekend. But then is that a defender's mistake for not spotting the danger?

Anyway. I'm not sure what Chris The Baker is saying here. That Spurs follow a typical rollercoaster route? Sublime to farcical back to sublime in a few weeks? Surely he can't have been following that long, otherwise he'd realise that's just simply Spurs?
