You do get the feeling that Wengers last 2 years could be like treading water. He may regret not going in May when he could have put both fingers up to his critics with the FA cup in the other hand. It's so much more difficult for him now than it was ten years ago with the new financing and the facts that other clubs like us have caught up.

My desperation for any football has led to me watching these ****s on fucking Quest in their shitty little pre-season cup.

Usual Arsenal crowd though - half empty and lots of foreign people sitting still in silence. Benfica fans having fun.

Yeah I'm the same...no wonder they've been advertising this 'cup' so hard on the radio, place is half empty.
Coquelin off injured already.

2-2 at half time, they literally cannot defend, still, after 20 years that silly prick hasn't figured it out :ROFLMAO:

I really do wonder what is the point of a contract with a player these days. They may as well not have a time length but simply say 'until one of us is fed up with the other' and leave it at that. Clubs have absolutely no guarantee now regarding a player's commitment to the club and including a monetary 'release clause' just turns the whole deal into a time bomb awaiting an incoming bid from a rival. As soon as a footballer becomes unhappy he then either refuses to train, claims he is unwell or starts to drastically underperform. It is the latter which annoys me intensely as it affects the rest of the team and does nothing for overall morale. Personally I would like to see release clauses include an amount of money that has to come from the player's own funds. e.g. Neymar can go for £195m but the bidding club only has to find £175m and he forks out the other £20m....this deal then being carefully monitored to ensure his new club do not 'repay' the amount after the deal is done....something along those lines anyway...which would at least say "You want out early ?....it costs"
When a club no longer wants someone and puts him on the open transfer market...they presumably have to 'pay off' the outstanding contractual obligations when he moves....so why not reverse this requirement when it's the player who wants out ??

I agree with some of what you're saying, but the new club would just increase the players wages. There's no way you could prove why they were doing it. And if you're going to do that then to make it completely fair the clubs should be made to write into the contact the promise's they made to the player when they signed him. I imagine that Wenger told Sanchez that they'd be challenging for the title every season, that they'd be playing in the champions league finals, and that he'd be playing in a stadium with a fantastic atmosphere.

They are currently losing at home to Sevilla 2-1.....if they lose I bet you Arsene blames some 'dodgy' oranges they had at half time !

Yeah Sevilla have looked pretty good, Woolwich still look shaky at the back.

Surely even Wenger couldn't bring himself to say that to a potential recruit, at least not while keeping a straight face.

"We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group," said the manager. "He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher.

"As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season."

They had to arrange the tournament in a way that would favour them though.
Sevilla won both their games, so had it just been about points, they would have won it.
However, the scum introduced a new approach - each goal scored is a bonus point.

He'll be nearly 20m richer.. I think he'll cope with that.
