“We have two leagues,” Wenger said at his Monday morning press conference. “For example, we had to fight very hard at Stoke and Southampton. But some teams once they are safe have a breather, which didn’t happen 10 years ago. The league has changed mentally. Morally it has changed a lot.”
Asked to expand on what that meant, Wenger promised that he would “explain another time”. But the implication was clear enough: teams do not feel the same duty once they are safe.
“Some teams turn up, some teams are on holiday,” Wenger shrugged in frustration. “It is very difficult to plan. You just want your team to do well and to focus completely until the last. To be professional is to do your job properly until the last second of the season.”
Aw bless. Because West Ham rolled over vs Liverpool? it's the same as Chelsea last year vs us (compared to their other games), Swansea last year vs Leicester (and Southampton as well, I think?), and probably countless other games down the years. If you have to rely on others, then you are in trouble. He has a point that some turn up and some are on holiday but it has always been like this, hasn't it? He just didn't notice when his team was in control.
He also means those teams are unprofessional. Well, yes, that's why Chelsea were so low down last year, Swansea last and this, and West Ham as well. If they were professional enough to fight to the end, they would show the same level of intensity throughout the season and be higher up. It must come from the manager; safe, done our job, go out there and see what happens.
I would like to remind Mr Wenger of his team's 2013 run in.
Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd - After United had already secured the title
QPR 0-1 Arsenal - After QPR had already been relegated
Arsenal 4-1 Wigan - Three days after Wigan won the FA Cup final and had clearly been out celebrating
Newcastle 0-1 - After Newcastle had secured survival the week before
In three of those four games the opposition had literally nothing to play for and if there had been just a single goal swing in any of those games then they would have dropped below us and out of the Champions League places. I still think Bale would have ended up leaving but I think we'd have been able to spend the money better if we had CL football to go with it and they surely wouldn't have signed Ozil if they were only in the Europa League.
If Middlesbrough roll over and die on Saturday then that's justice as far as I'm concerned.
