Because it’s not how we operate. Financially yes of course we could hypothetically afford players in the upper bracket but it’s not our MO. Just because we have the money to buy high value players doesn’t mean they still can’t be out of reach for other reasons.
We’re also really bad at big money signings!

One year ago our club was an utter shambles and when a deal like this collapsed I would have been fuming at how inept we were to close out deals and stepping away from players who could have turned into superstars, (you only have to look at kim min jae and kvicha in recent history).

however, i have gone full 180 due to our dealings in the summer and this window as well as with the Ange project that I am literally a bit meh about this. We tried to do a deal that we thought was good for us and the player, and the player and selling club moved the goals posts, (which you can’t blame them for). I want a player who is fully committed in what we are doing at our club right now and i want them to back themselves, much like dragusin did a few weeks ago.

You move on to the next one, we cant always get the first targets we wanted, no club ever has a 100% success rate in closing out deals. As much as i hate what city have done with their financial doping, the one thing i commend them for is they never get held to ransom and are always willing to walk away. I hope we do that when the deal isn’t right for us.

Isn't this why missing out on Nusa is so disappointing though? We have been told we've accepted that we can't compete for the ready made stars so we focus on the potential stars and Nusa is one of the most highly rated youngsters in Europe. Him and his family were willing to come to us but we caused the deal to collapse by trying to fundamentally changing it.
I hope it's not a sign that we are going to half arse this type of strategy, we are either going to try and fully adopt the strategy of signing the best young talent available or we're not. If we half arse it then what's the point?! We are a London based club with a lot of pulling power for young players, if we truly went for the strategy we could be a destination club for young talent like we have done with sarr and udogie.

While no one should be getting pitch forks out etc I do think it's a really disappointing outcome and hopefully isn't a sign that we aren't fully committed to what is meant to be our strategy

So if the deal fell through purely because Ange required the signing in now - it means that we will definitely be signing an attacker that can affect the first team squad in the next couple of days..?
Not sure that will be the case. Sounded to me that we asked to have him now after originally being happy for him to come in summer, his price went up, we hoped it would come back down then other clubs got involved at the new price point.

I’m sure we would ideally want someone in this window but i can’t see us pushing for anyone unless there is a target we really like that is available at a decent price which I am sceptical there will be at this point. We were working on that Nusa deal for a while it seemed. There isn’t much time in the window left so I’m not going to get my hopes up that something else will materialise. More likely I think we will hold back the money for summer.

Brentford got fleeced with the final deal. Gutted though, was holding out some hope we’d come back in and get him somehow.

The wait for a quality wide player goes on.

I can see why everyone was excited, I was too, and I can understand the disappointment. He sure looks like a great prospect.

But I also think it's not unreasonable for the club to hesitate to pay 30m for an 18-year-old who isn't regularly starting in Belgium.

Time will tell. I have faith in our current setup.

Trust me I’m with you on this one. It’s really a shame to miss out on him but how this played out seems text book: put in an offer we deemed reasonable, Brugge ask for more, we don’t budge because we think he’s over valued now, other teams come in at raised price point, player/club happy with one of the other teams, we move on. Sometimes it works in our favour if other teams don’t come in and/or the player only has eyes for us and other times it doesn’t. What seems to be the constant is how we go about things in that we aren’t often willing to deviate much from our value regardless if the parameters change. We just move on. It’s why we end up taking 2 or 3 windows to buy someone we could have gotten in 1.

As I said earlier the one positive is that there are actually quite a few very exciting young WF prospects out there in the 18-20 range currently. If we target them or not remains to be seen but we can still hypothetically end up with a player with large potential. We just have to hope the same situation doesn’t repeat itself if/when we do.

Well if we aren't going to operate like that, what was the point of building the new stadium? What is the point of all of these commercial deals?

Who are you thinking @Ghost Hardware ?

For my LW list I’ve got Williams and Savio, then Osman as a very raw option.

RW I’ve got Neto, Olise and Bakayoko plus Bardghji as a younger option.

we have been bad at all types of signings in the past big money and small money from Ndombele to N’jie. Whatever has happened with Paratici we are a different club now. We shouldn’t limit ourselves due to weaknesses we once had.

I dont understand why we wouldnt wait until the summer for this kid.....to walk away from the deal implies we need that profile of player now.....and have other options.

If not, why not sign him and loan back until the summer?

Either way its been a good window

If they offered a sell on fee I'm not surprised Brugge went for it as I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have done that.
12.5% is a hefty sell on when you consider that player sales also include an average tax of 20% (if its domestic). Limits the up-side.

That's a deal I'd be disappointed if we did. When you identify a target you must also assess what is good value in the deal and move on if that can't be attained. 37 mill and a sell on for an 18 yr old with potential. No thanks. The recruitment team can use that money in a better way imo.
