I thought Townsend was right footed but strong with both, could be wrong though!

Definitely left footed - but made his debut for Spurs in the cup v Coventry about 2 seasons ago playing right wing getting motm and a goal. Equally scored against Carlisle starting on right wing beating 2 defenders to score with his left foot. He's pretty close to being 2 footed - a rarity.

Overall think he is better than Bale on the right side (ie not his prefered side) and equally better than Lennon on his 'wrong' side. Still a lot to learn but whenever he comes on he tries hard, very direct running - as fast as anyone i the premiership - decent crosses and able to come inside. Able to score a few goals which is always good.

Think he will be a benefit to the squad, and hope he gets a few starts as well as sub opportunities this season, which will take pressure off Bale and/or Townsend.

Too early to tell if he will be at Spurs in 3 years time as a first team member - but imo he's got a good chance.

If only he could engage his brain more often then he could turn out to be an excellent player. All the tools are there - great pace, strength, dribbling ability, excellent shot and cross with both feet, etc. However, his use of the ball is often retarded. He's incredibly greedy and is always looking to create Hollywood moments rather than using the ball intelligently. Generally attempts to go past one player too many instead of getting his head up and doing what's best for the team.

I would hope that it's something that he will grow out of, but he's been playing this way ever since he first appeared on the youth scene a few years ago and the complaints remain the same. At the least he presents a viable danger off the bench, but he's 21 now so it's time to smarten up. Hopefully AVB can be the one to open his eyes.

Townsend has mainly played for lower league teams, or for us against lower league teams, where if he wanted to try something very ambitious with the ball (like run half the pitch before scoring, as he did a couple of seasons back in the Championship) he'd be more than able to and would look the absolute bollocks. Therefore, it is quite understandable that with not much game time under his belt for Spurs against Premier League quality opposition, he seems to try too much and run into trouble a bit too often. When Cristiano Ronaldo came over from Portugal (yes, a far superior player and also a couple of years younger than Townsend is now) he'd experienced only playing in a league where he could shit over all opponents as much as he liked. People said he was selfish, a luxury, a headless chicken. With consistent playing time he grew out of it, figured out how to best use his strengths, and became both a great scorer and a great provider of goals. This took him at least a season of being a regular, a bit more in fact. Therefore, I'm not going to really judge Townsend until (assuming this happens) he has had a season of being in and around the first team, coming on regularly, starting a few hopefully, but the talent is obviously there and there's no reason why he can't make the most of it. Who knows, he could end up as another Taarabt, or he could be a very good winger who we don't worry about starting if one of the first choice guys is unable to.

Could be another loan to a premiership team come January if he doesnt get many minutes between now and then, half a season playing regularly at PL level will do him the world of good.

I agree in principle, but not if he is the only cover we have for Bale and Lennon, right now if we get an injury to either one he is the only on that can replace either of them at the moment, that is anywhere near their speed.

After watching some of the stuff he did at Brentford I knew he was talented. Lots of good things about him will go far I think.

I'm a fan. While he is not electric off the mark as Lennon, nor has the lung busting pace of a Bale, he is quick, a good dribbler, good balance and agility, can put in a decent ball and can score from around 20 yards out.

He is exactly the type of player we need in the third place slot for wingers. Sure, if Bale or Lennon got injured a Dempsey or someone will get in ahead of him, initially at least, but he is a more than a competent back up. Very pleased he has moved up the pecking order and I think he will use the cups to improve his reputation and push for more league appearances.

I thought it was time he got his own thread. So what do we think of him?

Is he one who will be in and around the team but end up at a mid table prem club or can he be genuine competition for Bale & Lennon?

I think he looks really promising and I am glad he is getting a chance. Pace to burn as well as ability on the ball. Seems he can finish too! I have a good feeling about him.

Lennon perhaps but I doubt he wil ever be competition for Bale who it's easy to forget is still a youngster himself and not much older than townsend but already light years ahead of him

As I said in the match ratings thread after the Lazio game, I personally think he's looking a more talented footballer than either Walcott or Oxlaide-Chamberlain at the moment. Every time I see those two play I see them making huge amounts of basic errors in control, passing, and finishing. Townsend has demonstrated that he can do all those things well so far and looks just as quick as either of them.

I can't wait to see him properly come through and hopefully he will prove me right in the long-term. He's hugely promising though and negates the constant screams from the fans that we desperately need to go out and buy a winger.

As a bonus, he can play on either side with equal effectiveness which is very rare.
Walcott is not a footballer, when he dribbles with a football it looks like he is dribbling with a rugby ball. OX is good but he tries to do too much. Townsend has better footballing ability than Walcott but lacks his raw pace.
