We need players playing for the team.
Andros plays for team Andros.
Would be some player if he played for his team mates.
Learn or leave, Andros over to you.

I don't want to see Townsend go. He was a bright spark when coming on against West Ham in a match that was just simply quite dull at least when looking at our performance. I still without a doubt think he could be a good asset to have from the bench.

Agreed no point selling Towsend unless we are bringing a winger or wide attacker replacement. We have to have variety to do something different if things don`t go to plan and Townsend and Lennon are great options off the bench when the game is getting stretched..

Too many people in this forum only think about one formation and the first 11 players ... but this is a squad game and Townsend was great when he came on against West Ham, likewise Lamela changed the game when he came on in Cyprus after being quite ordinary against West Ham.

Ludicrous to compare the reaction each team had when Lamela and Townsend came on. Lamela came on and made the TEAM better, then went and had actual production in creating two goals. Townsend conversely gets absolutely no production and all he did was come in against a 10 men West Ham side and get off a couple shots from distance.

Townsend very simply does not provide enough to the team or as an individual. He is selfish and gets absolutely no results for it.

I agree that the team can benefit from having different style attacking players, but Townsend is just not one of them. He makes zero contributions to this team and team is the key word here as that's what Poch is trying to build. Townsend seems a long ways away from learning how to play under a team setting.

But surely you agree no point selling him if we do not get an attacking replacement in addition to schniederlin

No. I think we're fine with selling him because he isn't an attacking player. In theory he is, but again the proof is in the pudding and he hasn't provided any production. We could bring in any of other other subs and get the same or more production from them than Townsend has given us so far. For example lets say the starting top 4 is Ade-Chadli-Eriksen-Lamela, we could bring on any of Holtby, Paulinho, Kane, Soldado, or even Lennon on and they could impact the game just as well as Townsend could.

Lennon is the key one there for me, he could provide the wide play you're asking for and the biggest depressing thing for me is Lennon actually has more attacking production than Townsend has. Plus Lennon plays a TEAM game (there's that word again) and even contributes well defensively. Not to mention Lennon can also act in that super sub role you may want. Lennon won't kick up a fuss sitting on the bench and playing only sporadically. Do you think Townsend would do the same? I do not and part of the reason I think that is because Townsend is not a team player.

I'm even having a hard time letting this logic sink in myself. Aaron fucking Lennon actually gives this team more than another of our players.

I don't think he plays for himself, I just think he doesn't have the footballing intelligence to play any other way. His game has always been based around beating players and shooting/crossing. If you contrast that with Lamela, he is always looking to pass first because he understands that it is the most effective way of getting into good positions. Only once an opportunity presents itself does Lamela try to dribble etc. If townsend could learn that he would be a great player. Unfortunately I don't see any signs of that happening!

I think if we bringing in a wide a left striker or winger for example Jay Rodriguez then I have no issue with selling him... Otherwise I say let Pochettino try to improve him as he obviously has talent but needs to learn to be more productive.
I put him in the same same boat as Holtby and Paulinho. To be fair Chadli and Lamela only started to step up in the last couple of games so there is hope..

Um, Chadders was good last season but overlooked in favour of AT's flair. Chadders was still more effective than AT

If any of you are done beating your meat to the fazio news and read this, Guan 2.0, resident SaintsWeb ITK, confirmed today that there is something to the Townsend rumors on the saints end…

Guan 2.0 I have been away for a week, so will have to find out.
If the Townswnd stuff is true, i will not bother to post but just save time and facepalm 100 times.

Guan 2.0 Pretty much! Also, Clasie has been in consideration for a while. Be grateful that Vormer was only a momentary contemplation!

EDITED for Clarity - Guans first post here was from a little while ago. since he had not posted about townsend - one member posited that there was some truth to it and Guan confirmed.

When the chips are down, if Townsend going means getting Schneiderlin... he won't hesitate to sell regardless of what he says to the press.

Lets see if Poch can succeed where AVB failed. To get his midfield dynamo.

Acutally Mate, that wasn't Guan's last post- he was referring to a different post by Guan in which he said this:

So he hasn't posted in ages so the Saints fans are wondering if it's true...

another saints ITK who mentions a bid for Townsend...

Beefy Today, 05:23 PM

Yeah, been after a winger and a defender who can play rb/cb. Been talking to Clasie for ages as well, reason why his move Porto is dragging.
Made 2 bids for Redmond and one for Townsend.
