Yes, you ahve picked out 1 pass. And TBF that is a pass he can play and has done multiple times in the last 3 years as a MF. The first time he played that pass was the drubbing at the lane vs WHam and Dele predictably miscontrolled but that's whole 'nother can of worms I would prefer not to open. I am not talking about the occasional 'deep ball' down the middle that he serves up. It is a similar technique to his wonderful whipping crosses he used when playing RB. But it is similar to Coutinho's brilliant whipped shots in that they only occur under certain circumstances.Yes that pass he played to Dele at Stamford Bridge was just shockingly bad. Some proper BC inspired rubbish on SC sometimes.
If you were actually looking to evaluate Dier's passing you would be critical of his futile station to station passing that doesn't move the defense/press. You would also look at how many are misplaced a few steps behind the intended player instead of in stride or into the space in front. You would also judge the time it takes him to recognize a pass but then have to hit it so hard that it is almost impossible for the player to comfortably receive it...and that is if the defense hasn't picked it off because it was telegraphed. You would also critique his fucking floaters out wide that take forever and a day to get out to a player that was previously in acres but is now being closed down. Rooney got pelters for those shit balls while on England duty. You would also wonder why he receives the ball with his body closed to play instead of opening his body so that he has options. Instead he traps right, shifts right, and then plays a simple ball to the next guy over. He is not a MF and never will be. But we can disagree on that.
But it is alright for you to think otherwise. Being critical takes work and no one likes extra work. And everytime he gets picked from behind we can both rejoice in his exploits. I look forward to more hot potato in our MF this season. It will be the perfect way to christen the new stadium with oldies but goodies. Good thing it is Liverpool as otherwise we might get away with it.
