We have this perfectly worked out: Wolves buy him. He steadily progresses, until he reaches Maddison's level in four years, which just happens to be the season Wolves get relegated. He has 1 yr left on his contract, and we poach him for 40m.

(I really should stop going to clairvoyants!!)

Seriously though... good move for Wolves. I just hope the lad will get a chance to play.

And let's face it... every single transfer for a player like this is a risk. We thought Clarke was going to develop into a very good player. But things happened, and he didn't get the chance to develop. Turns out, to some extent, we were right. But... the timing was wrong.

As suggested, we have bigger eggs to fry.
Writing was on the wall with Clarke though. When we were signing him I said he wasn’t a top talent and after he collapsed on the pitch he was very poor the rest of the season. He wasn’t even seen as the best talent at leeds st the time.

As much as I’d like us to be signing him, he really needs to go somewhere where he’ll be guaranteed playing time and that’s not here is it.

Bristol City are getting good offers for him, and as things stand I think he'll end up in gold. Nothing set yet but Wolves pushing hardest as of this morning. We are 100% still holding an interest and monitoring the situation, but I don't see us moving for him until others are moved on, if at all.
Extremely disappointed with this. Scott has all the attributes to be a top player. Wish we had pulled out all the stops to make it happen. Think we will regret it.

I have no doubts that we will. I don't see any sense not being in for him. He will slot our team perfectly. Our strategy is not about poaching the end product, but looking for the players with high ceilings.

But we have a finite amount of money, I’ve read they want 35/40 million for him so it’s a big out lay when we need 3 cbs.

We could start by giving Lloris, Perisic and Dier free transfers, will save 20m.
I think we will with 2 of them. We have a huge squad and need to move on a few players before we go for a deal like this I would imagine.

Yeah I feel the same. I’d love us to sign him but he just doesn’t really get any game time here unless we play 433 with 8’s. We have Maddison and Devine for the 10 spot, Bissouma/Bentancur/Sarr/Skipp for the 6 which he can’t play anyway. He just doesn’t really fit with our plans and even if we played with 8’s would he be of the required standard right now to start regularly? I don’t think so. He’s not the best move for us right now and we aren’t for him either, it’s a shame

Perhaps this is indicative of not being in Europe and limited game time domestically.

Shame to potentially miss out but there's more pressing issues in our squad right now and that's where the resources need to be directed to.

Shame but not entirely surprised. I think if we really wanted him we probably would have already made stronger attempts. Maybe if we hadn’t of got Maddison we’d be more inclined but as it is I don’t see us paying whatever fee they’d want. Can’t help but feel we will regret it in time tho.

Ether way i think I’m going to stop hoping we sign specific players. I came into this window wishing we’d go for at least one of Kang-in, Scott or Veiga (all of which we had been linked by the press also so it wasn’t a complete pipe dream) and I think at this point it’s incredibly unlikely. So it goes.

If I was advising him I'd absolutely tell him to pick a club like Bournemouth or Wolves over us at this stage in his career tbh.

He needs guaranteed minutes and at a club like Spurs that's always a risk for a young player coming up from the Championship. Especially in a such a key midfield role.

On the other hand he'd likely start 90% of games at a bottom half team and really get the chance to develop.

Scott did play no10 this season but it isnt the only position he likes to play or thrives in.
He can shield the ball, as well as dribble well with it.

With the ability he has, he can be a 6 or 8 or 10 - doesnt matter.
His stock is high , going to be difficult to convince & get him. Hoping for the best

For every James Maddison there's a Will Hughes, it's never a guarantee coming from the Championship.

If I was Scott I'd go somewhere I'd be guaranteed to play though. And since he's a Spurs supporter, maybe It'll be easier to buy him after a few successful seasons.

Think he would have been a perfect signing to fill in while Bentancur is out though.

If he'd have had a successful 6 months playing for us then his value would already have likely doubled. Very similar to likes of Eze/Olise/Maddison where after probably 5/6 premier league games, their values rocketed.

I imagine that ideally we'd have liked to sign him and then keep him around while Bentancur was out, and then potentially loan him out to a lower prem club if needed. But I think we were probably hoping for a price point of around £15m in order to invest in this idea, whereas the £30m+ price is seen as too prohibitive when we have other much more pressing matters.

This kinda sums up my point though.

He might be starting here while our international CM is injured for a few months (could be back in Oct/Nov apparently) or he goes to a team a bit lower down and plays an entire season.

Olise and Eze's values rocketed because they actually got games over the course of a couple of seasons not in 5/6 games IMO. Both would've got nowhere near as much gametime at Spurs under Jose/Conte compared to the amount they've played at Palace.

Not saying I wouldn't like us to sign Scott, just looking at this purely from the player development POV.

Yeah I 100% agree that from the players POV it would make more sense to go a lower prem team, I was just speaking more so from our perspective on signing him.

And then hoping that the fact he's a spurs fan would ultimately sway him to take the chance of playing time with us.

All I can say. Let us not waste this golden egg opportunity
Indeed …. Even if it means we buy him & loan him out …. That said I haven’t yet seen him play … but have seen/read loads raving about him … so this could be our one chance
