I really don't see how swapping Lukaku for Martinez solves Inter's financial problems. If Chelsea still owe a substantial amount of the Lukaku fee, this will appear on the Inter balance sheet as an asset (under Creditors). If Lukaku returns to Inter with no further payments from Chelsea it would wipe (allegedly) 70m off the balance sheet. Selling Martinez for a similar fee would simply put the balance sheet back to where it is now, and Inter would still need to sell players.
I feel like the only way it makes sense if Inter swap Lukaku for Martinez plus, say, 30m on top. This 30m would be roughly the same they'd get from selling Bastoni and buying Bremer, thus serving the same purpose (covering half of the 60m they owe).

From Inter's POV that deal makes a lot of sense as Lukaku is beloved and a proven success at the club. The insane part of it is that Chelsea would effectively be spending £130m on Lautaro given what they paid for Lukaku a year ago.

...but then that's exactly the kind of mad shit they do and get away with.

I'm not happy with all this pissing about with Inter. Christ alive the world is bigger than Inter & Juve. I'm very aware of the clock ticking. Pre-season is a lot shorter than we think. I hope to God Fabio is already looking very closely at other left sided defensive targets. I'm also not happy about dragging any player here who doesn't specifically want to come here, so as far as I'm concerned, Bastoni can 'do one'.

I guess it would be £130m less whatever the initial instalment was, but regardless of that it's still pretty unrealistic.

I was hoping post-Abramovich they would have to start suffering from their transfer mistakes like normal clubs but maybe that's not the case. Wouldn't surprise me to see them fall on their feet.

Well said, I doubt that Bastoni will prove to be better than Davies. We need extra depth sure, but only with players who want to be here. I think there are too many question marks against Bastoni to haggle over him.

The new owners may want to make a statement signing to kick off their new tenure and get the fans onside. However effectively giving Lukaku back to inter, and then giving them cash on top for Martinez seems wildly unrealistic even for Abramovich's Chelsea, let alone the new Boehly run Chelsea.

Let's wait and see. I'm yet to see any reliable reports of this happening, not doubting Herc, but it's only one source so far. On paper it just seems to not make any sense to Inter financially.

I wonder what Martinez’ stance would be if we put an offer on the table for him. It’s not a Diaz scenario where he had his heart set on Liverpool. I don’t see Martinez having such a craving to go to Chelsea especially after how they treated Lukaku. I’m not saying we sign both but I wonder how Inter would react if we offered say £60m each for Bastoni and Martinez? I would like to think with Conte’s pull that our offers would be more favourable than a complex Lukaku Martinez swap. It will suck in Chelsea’s meddling costs us Bastoni but for once we’re in a position stand our ground should we decide to do so.

He’ll probably fancy his chances and probably be up for it. Short careers and all that.

Hopefully Chelsea end up having to settle on a loan deal to get Lukaku out of the door for a season, similar to us with Ndombele.

I mean one way round this would to put bids in for both players? Match Chelsea’s bid and go toe-to-toe. Think the bidding war was always going to happen.

I'm relaxed about this because Ben Davies has been brilliant this season.

Perisic is the more important one in my opinion.

Gotta get our act together before Chelsea get into gear. Another reason we have to move quickly in the next few weeks because if the new owners at Chelsea look to make a splash then it will slow everything down for us.

Fortunate there are good centre backs around Europe available.

If Bastoni not close by the end of the week have to move on and go down the list can we get Pau Torres with Lo Celso? Gvaridol? Breimer, Bassey all good players. If you can't get them move onto Skrinar, De Vrij. If we get obsessed with Bastoni the price goes up and we risk missing out on our 2nd choice.

Tbf there was always going to be other interest in their top players. Get it done, before someone else does. Sit on your hands and the game was for nowt.

Most Chelsea fans I know expected at least a transfer ban for the £1.6b loan write off, but sounds like they're getting away for free again doesn't it? ??

No problem with going for 2nd choices. Kulu was a 2nd choice after Diaz and he worked out great for us and probably was a better fit even though Diaz is a great player in his own right.
