A change of formation in the summer?

Posted this in another thread, but thought I'd start a topic on it to get some views on the potential of it.

The system is based around signing Toldo, Poulsen and Diego, as well another centre-back in the Jarque mould.

Anyway, here goes...

What about a sort of cross between the Man Utd 4-4-2 and the Chelsea 4-5-1?

I seem to remember Barca playing a not too dissimilar formation in the early 00's.

Bale would have a lot of attacking licence, with Poulsen dropping into the left-back position when he did. Diego would be given the free-role with Jenas and Poulsen protecting him.

Lennon would give us width on the right, as would Hutton. The system could be switched at any time, with Lennon moving to the left, Poulsen and Jenas swapping positions, and the former covering the right-back position while Hutton bombs forward.

When we're defending, Keane would drop into the left-wing position, with Diego dropping back to form the current 4-5-1/4-3-3 variation.

It would be interesting to see if it could work.

NO, we are (in that formation) appling far too much pressure on a young LB, and where does steeeed fit in!?

Is that ITK regarding the new faces?

Not necessarily. There's about the same amount of pressure on the 'exposed' full back as in a Brazilian 4-2-2-2 formation. The full-back in question is actually given a lot of cover with a defencive midfielder almost dedicated to filling into the role while the full-back bombs forward, playing more like a winger when on the offensive.

and where does steeeed fit in!?

Steed's a cracking player, and one of my favourites, but he could still be improved on, and Diego is an upgrade.

I wish :-(

Toldo is simply a suggestion from Van_Pommel. A once £18.5m keeper, he's now 36 and being kept out of the team by Julio Cesar. Either Toldo or Palop (Sevilla) are my choices.

Poulsen has been heavily linked since Ramos took over, and I recently read a story suggested we'll make our move in the summer.

Diego has been linked with some of the biggest in the business in the last 12 months... and us :) Almost signed him as a kid from Santos, and he's even been to WHL to look around before, so if we were to still be showing an interest now, who knows

Doubt Ramos will go away from the simple 4-4-2

I agree. I don't see Ramos' changing at all. The thread's more about 'would it work'.

I think it'd be bloody great, but I'm biased :)

I fully expect us to stay in a 4-4-2 next season and unlike some I'm expecting a flurry of transfer activity this summer as Ramos stamps his mark on the team with a number of arrivals from La Liga.

This was effectively the formation we switched to against the Chavs, except Hutton patrolled the right flank alone, Jenas played ahead of the Hud and Zoko in CM, and Lennon and TT occupied the left flank.

I would imagine Ramos will set up his squad around a 4-4-2 formation. But during matches, he may in necessity be prepared to weaken one flank to add reinforcements to CM - or in other words, switch to this sort of formation.

The irony with that formation is that the way to combat it would be with that formation. Someone wide on the right would stop the LB getting forward and would cause your attack to be down one side of the field.

Now what does that remind me of?

Not really as the forward 4 have licence to go pretty much anywhere, the 2 midfield enforcers provide this freedom.

For this to work effectively at least 1 (prefeerrably both) of your enforcers need to be excellent offensive passers.

It is just a different slant on the 4-4-2

So it's a basic 442 but with Diego instead of Steed and a decent player instead of Zokora?

I think both Toldo and Palop are better than Amelia, personally.

Not saying it won't happen but would be very disappointing given that we have pursued a DoF strategy to prevent this exact thing happening when we change managers....

Makes manager/coach changes unbelievably expensive if they can just come in and turn-over the entire squad with their country men.

really!!?? I think 90% of Italians (including myself) will tell you otherwise!!

Furry muff :)

Toldo and Palop always seems sturdier to me than Amelia, who every time I've seen him, doesn't seem to command his area like we'd need a new keeper to do.

True, but Toldo is a worse shot stopper then Amelia (mostly due to his age/loss of reflexes) and Amelia has fantastic possitanal sence
