IMO we as fans, need to stop thinking like the "old Spurs" sides. I am convinced we can hang into 3rd or even improve on it, if we truely want to change and actually challenge us as fans need to believe and support the team. That's not to say we should be unrealistic but the truth of the matter is we can finish second, my god if Liverpool fans still believe they can finish 4th, we should definitely believe 2nd place is possible.

Yes our target at the start of the season was probably top 6, but aims and targets should be evaluated and changed dynamically. This is the bussiness end of the fixture list and I for one am excited, I'm not for once shitting myself that we will blow it, I have confidence in AVB and the squad to continue their form, and get a result at Anfield

We shouldn't be worried, Man City and Cheaslea should be bricking it. Both have underperfomed lately, both have manigerial difficulties, both sets of players must be slightly wondering wot their future holds. I believe we can finish 3rd and possibly 2nd, what have we to lose by believing?

3rd minimum? Lets not get carried away. Target this season has always been top 4 and it still is. 4th would still be a great achievement given squad/ managerial changes.

Of course we should aim for as high as a we can get but is still reckon everyone on here would be happy if the season ended and we were in 4th (especially given that would mean either Chelsea or Arsenal miss out).

and if we don't make the CL group stage and don't sign a forward because we don't know if we will make the CL group stage will they still be happy

why aim low when 3rd is there for the taking, smacks of small club mentality if i am honest

4th is good enough, thought Man U going out the CL has no effect on this, we need arsenal out for 4th to get us into a play off to get into CL group stage, but we should be aiming higher to get straight into the group stages.

I think the game at Anfield shoud tell us where we are at the moment. If we get a result there then I'll start getting my hopes up for 2nd. Lose and i'd take 4th in a heartbeat.

Football is decided on such fine margins. We could have easily drawn/lost against West Ham and lost against Arsenal and we could have been sat 2 points behind Arsenal looking to a game at Liverpool and it would be all doom and gloom. I know the fact that we showed heart and confidence in those games show how far we've come but there is still a good slice of luck involved.

The better you are the luckier you get.

3 points on Sunday would put us 2 off 2nd place with City going to Everton the following Saturday lunchtime and ourselves home to Fulham on the Sunday, one game at a time and all that but the next couple of weeks we could find ourselves in a fantastic position. Just pray Bale doesnt get injured.

I agree - there is no doubt that the culture change at the club and new approaches in training has brought about our recent success after 80mins. However, you cannot doubt that there is a slice of luck involved too and it could be so different so easily. I'm not trying to be negative here, just saying I'm trying not to get my hopes too high until after the Liverpool game.

Same. However, If we get a win up there i'll be pretty relaxed about our remaining games.

I wouldn't take fourth if offered right now.

Come the end of the season, I'll be satisfied with fourth, I'll be happy with third, I'll be delighted with second.

If Arsenal drop out of the CL I would take 4th place right now. I understand the arguments for pushing for 3rd and 2nd, but we all know what happened last season.

I would much prefer our chances over a home & away tie against some team from Switzerland rather than battling both Arsenal, Chelsea and City over a fairly tough 10 game run-in.

I actually think we are going to finish 2nd in the league this year (maybe foolishly) but like last season, if somebody had a magic button I could push to guarantee us 4th place then I would push it. A bird in the hand and all that...

Now Fergie is too distraught to talk, I'm expecting Man Utd to nose dive and for us to clinch the title on the last day! To dare is to do.

An automatic spot would make such a difference in being able to get our foot in the door wrt to certain transfers, imo. 4th would not be fatal but any uncertainty wouldn't exactly be a positive.

What you say about it possibly taking some pressure off us, I agree, GS. Hopefully we see our form continue as a result. No more looking over our shoulder etc. Just take each game head on.

That's the thing - our margin for error has been pretty small... Bale walloping it into the top corner at the last moment is surely as tight as you can get.

But as AVB said, in some ways it's a positive. We're not playing especially well but we're getting results and improving (maybe the most promising thing about the arsenal match was how Dembele started to dictate our player instead of Parker). We're coming into the season finale on an upswing.

So whilst there's reason to be concerned - at this stage it would be irrational to be looking down instead of up.

In my post which you replied to I said to aim high but that most people would be happy with 4th.

You then quoted, bolded the last part of this quote and said why aim low when I was suggesting we should aim high!! I'm confused!

Really think we can get 2nd if we beat city and they loose to United.

Massive game this Sunday. Not that Liverpool are contenders but Liverpool are playing better at the moment and with Suarez, Sturridge and Gerrard they have goals in them. Coutinho looked like he played well last week from the short highlights I saw.

Still be happy with top four but seeing how well we are playing as a team, just look at our defensive record recently, and I just have to believe we have enough to continue our form until the end of the season.

It might be good enough (though I won't be happy till Arse are actually out of the CL) but is 4th the best we can do? Ar we content to say that we have made no progress? I think we can get 3rd and still have an outside chance of 2nd.

Chelsea will be a real 6 pointer but maybe we can win there.

This is the kind of pressure we must thrive on as a club if we are to do well.
