I like the idea of hoovering up the top talent at smaller clubs. If it were Brighton going for him we'd probably all rate him more highly.

He's 26, so not young. He could be our number 1. I'm not too worried about needing to have a goalkeeper with Pirlo-like passing ability, they just need to be able to control the ball and pass it to the free man. The hardest short pass a keeper needs to make is between two pressing attackers to a player being closed down- this is a pretty rare type of pass though.

Was linked with Bayern and Lazio previously, both of whom play out from the back.

It's almost as if different fans may have different opinions!

Anyway, it seems like the consensus is that most are onboard with this signing. I may not have heard of him before, but that's why we've got a scouting team to find these gems.

Exactly. Sounds like a sensible buy. Can’t say I have a clue, but we should be getting the Bissoumas and Ceicesos and Kanter’s before they become mega expensive.

Hopefully our scouting is better than it was before!

It can't get much more emphatic than the Chief Scout and Manager both agreeing to pursue it and that's all that matters to me. Whether it's to save budget or simply Brentford asking too much, this clearly is not a Levy led 'bargain' but a unified decision across the club.

If he's anywhere near as successful as Paolo Tramezzani we've got a bargain on our hands.

Yes I was led to believe we had all but agreed a fee in the region of £33m. Clearly I jumped the gun. I'm all for returning to our old style of scouting and have no problem moving away from Raya. But it is strange when we were still talking to Brentford and I don't think we were miles apart.
I guess it's likely we always had an eye on this guy but it seemed almost nailed on he was going to Inter and once that fell through it became possible.
Maybe Raya was the "other" option?

This is a critical position where we are replacing a world cup winning captain.

Surely you go premier league proven when it is available?

All this data led stuff is great but with all respect we are not Brighton or Brentford.

We are the 3rd most profitable sports team in the world! I am waiting for the day when we actually act like it, sign some players that our rivals would want and take us to the next level.

Arsenal are trying to sign Declan Rice for 90mil, we are praying Newcastle don't beat us to Maddison and looking at a load of unknowns again.

The forum do a stellar job of convincing everyone they are great but 90% of the time they are average at best, not the required quality and we struggle to shift them.

Wouldn’t exactly use premier league proven as a measure, given the traditional top 6 all have a keeper that never played prem football before…apart from Ramsdale, who was laughed at when signed.

Spurs fans: “We want to be the club that scouts players and buys them before they are well known and cost so much”.

Buys highly rated Italian GK for great value.

Also Spurs fans: “This is way too big of a risk. What are we doing!”

You can’t have it both ways.

I've been doing a lot of work on myself and this morning I just had this angry realisation that I can't fucking win and nobody knows what they want from me and yet they try and control it. So seeing your post in the context of football actually really helped me feel better because it's true, so thanks  .

I made a post last night where I said along the lines of, I would feel confident with Raya in goal because of XYZ, it's what I think it's best, however I don't know the other keepers and that the scouting team will be showing what they're about and I realise now the parts more clearly. It's the willingness to admit that there's an element we don't know, just because we're confident in a solution doesn't make it absolute and we have to be willing to put our trust in somebody else's decision making to make a choice based on something we care about. So acknowledging we don't know for certain, putting trust in others and actually allowing them to succeed and fail by their own choices.

I think we have to give this new(ish) chief scout, Munn and Ange a certain level of trust and not project the failures of the past of others onto them. Even though I'd really like Raya  I applaud the risk taking though, they're truly backing themselves.

Are the people mentioning that Vicario isn’t young aware that Raya is older?

No real update but...

Theres part of me that still thinks this whole "preparing to make an official bid" line that we've had since yesterday is partly posturing but honestly I'd be very happy if we got him as I said yesterday. My only qualm is that it would have been very convenient to have a HG keeper but aside from that I don't see Vicario as a downgrade over Raya.

See, I'm not sure if that's out scouting network, or that the board doesn't listen to them fully though? We get linked to the right kind of players all the time, which gives me confidence we are identifying them. We then end up with someone completely different last minute on occasion, which feels the issue.
Yeah I'm not entirely blaming the scouting team. In fact I think the board sticking their oar in is much more the issue.

But it still begs the same question....what the hell are we doing?
