Gutted to not see this one get anywhere. For me RWB is not only the first priority we need to upgrade, but also second as well. I'd take two RWBs before one in any other position

Dan Kilpatrick saying we explored a move for him.

I don't get this one. He plays as a RW/LW/LWB for Atletico.

Maybe just an option if we sold Bergwijn?

Exclusive: Tottenham in talks to sign Atletico Madrid star Yannick Carrasco

Belgium international would provide competition for Emerson Royal as wing-back

Tottenham Hotspur are in talks to sign Yannick Carrasco from Atletico Madrid.

The versatile Belgium international can play either as a winger or a wing-back, on either side of the pitch, and has long been admired by Tottenham’s head coach Antonio Conte.

Spurs tried to sign Carrasco on January deadline day but Atletico did not want to sell the 28-year-old at that time.

However, they are prepared to strike a deal before the transfer window closes on Thursday with Manchester United having already considered making a move for Carrasco before concentrating their available funds on signing Antony from Ajax.

Carrasco would provide competition for Emerson Royal as the right-sided wing-back – the role he has been fulfilling for Atletico – in Conte’s 3-4-3 formation and can also play further forward and on the left-hand side. Royal would certainly appear to be the player whose place is most under threat in Conte’s line-up.

As yet a fee has not been fixed by Atletico on how much they want for Carrasco who has two years left on his contract having re-joined in 2020 after spending two years in China.

Under previous negotiations, Atletico wanted around £25 million. Carrasco has a release clause of £51.2m but that is not expected to be met with a deal struck for far less than that amount.

Although Carrasco has been an important player for Atletico under coach Diego Simeone the club are under pressure to sell some players to make sure they comply with the salary cap imposed by La Liga.

If a deal is agreed for Carrasco he will be the eighth summer signing as Spurs, who have made an unbeaten start to the season and are third in the Premier League, fully back Conte in the transfer market.

Carrasco made 34 league appearances for Atletico and featured seven times in the Champions League and has previously spoken about his interest in playing in the Premier League.
