i love the idea of loaning guys like Rodon out. He now has a clear understanding of how Conte's teams are supposed to play and he knows what would be required to make it back into the squad. If he responds professionally and works his backside off, there's upside for him and for Spurs. Godspeed Joe and make your presence felt there. Edit: Just saw the buy option. 20M isn't a bad piece of business if true.
€20M though, so it’d only be a profit of about £5M. Not that that’s nothing.

Obviously Lenglet is loaned to do that.

Rennes is still a surprising one, Joe seems to me like a good fit for lots of PL teams in the bottom half.
If Lenglet is loaned to do that, and can do that, then as I say Joe should leave.
I think until Prem proven we shouldn't trust him to do that, so it's not obvious to me.
I think Rodon is better than bottom half Prem, will be interesting to see where he ends up.

A few people surprised it's Rennes and not a Premier League club but it may be Rodon's choice, he probably feels he'll get to play and I'm not sure he'd agree to go there on loan with an option if he didn't really want to join the club. I expect he feels he can make his case for them to take up the option.

I don't think he is comfortable enough on the ball to cover Davies.
Maybe you're right, but is Lenglet good enough defensively to cover Davies.
ATM I prefer Rodon as cover, but of course as I say, if Conte doesn't trust Joe at LCB, then he should leave.

Good move for him, gets to play regularly (hopefully) and we get a decent fee or he's in the shop window for prem teams next summer.

I think he suffered due to the lack of HG rule in the Euro comps. If he was considered HG and not taking up a spot, I imagine he might have been kept as back up.

It's mad how Davies, dier, Rodon, doc etc don't count as HG due to bullshit rules.

Lenglet and Davies are different options which is exactly what we need.

Davies Vs the teams where we will be back to wall defending as that's what he's good at, Lenglet against teams that park the bus as he has better distribution and can carry the ball out from the back better.

I think it's been about building a squad with options, rather than like for like replacements, and that makes us a more dangerous side overall.

Yeah, but we don't know if Lenglet can defend against bus parkers. I get the theory, but I want to see him in Prem action before I make a call on him
Of course I understand what matters is Conte not me. But Conte doesn't always get it right re LCB, eg Sanchez.
We'll see what happens, I'll just be happy if Davies starts V Soton

100% I agree with the tried and tested Davies 1st match of the season.
The man has been a rock for club and country, and deserves his place, but he has his limitations and it's nice to have options now within the squad, rather than just a like for like replacement.
I think we will ultimately be better against all types of teams as we can pick the best player for the team we face, rather than having to stick to an 11 because the drop off in quality is huge to the replacement.

The curious case of Joe Rodon just got a bit curioser. All the managers apparently raved about him yet never played him, supposedly bossed it in training and locked rock solid for Wales but never got a look in; and didn’t count as home grown despite being born and raised in the UK. Now he’s going to Rennes, in the French league when there was apparent interest from the PL and Italy leaving us with no real cover at the CCB position. And we will apparently make a profit on him despite hardly playing for 2 years

So we only have 5 CBs now, correct? Assuming JT goes on loan too. So is the intention to bring in another CB in that case?

Ally Gold did say that if Rodon/Japhet go out we'd be bringing in another CB. So yes for sure, we definitely need 6. No idea who we might go for though, even Kim Min Jae is off the table now.

Weren't we interested in a very promising CB from Ukraine? He'll do nicely alongside Bastoni.

Zabarnyi I think is his name

Thank you, he looked very good for a 19 year old, not sure what his circumstances are regarding contract (which must be surprising given I couldn't remember his name) but yeah I thought we seemed quite keen judging by a few reports, could be wrong.

An option is only ever to the advantage of the (potentially) buying club; it’s a guaranteed completion price if the loan works out and something they never need to act upon if it doesn’t. And an obligation is as good as a sale; the difference is no more than an accounting trick. I’m amazed at the fans who get excited when we set an option price or frustrated when we ‘only’ agree a loan with obligation.

He's been woeful in the couple of chances I've had to watch him in Europe for club/intl. Don't get the hype there at all. The Armenian forwards were causing him all sorts of problems.

The guys never had a chance in the first team. Feel bad for the lad. 3 managers not picking him tho? Is he not great?

Shelfwatcher you rate Davies highly that's cool, but to me him and Dier are both upgradeable in defence. That is how top teams progress and remain competitive by upgrading first team players and that is something we as a club and fan base have struggled to want to do.

Before last season ended stories were breaking that we were after a ball playing LCB, Batoni, Gavardiol, Lenglet, Pau Torres these guys weren't targeted to play second fiddle they were seen as upgrading that side of the pitch to Conte's vision.

Your bias towards Davies is very strong Shelfwatcher, but Lenglet excelled playing in a 3 at Sevilla and also in his first couple of seasons at Barca and was considered one of the best LCB's in Europe, yet you talk like he has been playing non league whenever you mention him.
