Most of our competition had players at the WC yet you don’t see them having piss poor seasons on the level a chunk of ours have. Look at Walker he went off the boil when we knew he was off... Toby hasn’t been the same since last summer and Eriksen has been woeful.

as I replied to shelfboy

other than Man C, please tell me a team that had 12 players play at the world cup, with 9 of them playing all games bar 1 match. please make sure you give me a list

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the year we happen to spend nothing is also the one in which our stadium opening is delayed, with us having to continue playing at a half empty Wembley for longer than anticipated.

I don’t think the money was there. Hopefully it will be (at least to a reasonable extent) in the summer.
I think there was money that could have been used for transfers, but in the context of the time the decisions were being made the risk of spending said money on players was too great.
Pretty sure you’re spot on mate also added to that we have too many non homegrown players in the squad so we have to sell them first before we can sign anyone, I mentioned this time and time again during the last 2 transfer windows but people seem to keep forgetting this.

As we sold dembele that did free up one league space at least but not a CL space.

Squad needs cleaning up in summer with about 4-6 outs first then we can fine tune and bring in the 2-3 to move us to the next level.
A right back, a CM and another forward like Son imo.

Exactly. Just gonna be happy when the prem season is done and we can regroup and have a proper rest and preseason.

he took Toby off to make sure if we needed it, next week we could have our strongest defence in place v Everton. if Toby got sent off, and Jan isn't fit enough we would of been playing Foyth and Sanchez
Thats, as I said, idiotic imo.
How often has Toby been sent off?
You cant throw away the game you are in right now because if this and then this happens then next week this might happen!!!
We could have got something from THAT game. You dont make subs just because someone is on a yellow. If someone is on a yellow and looking like they are gonna get sent of then yes but he didnt did he.
Its not Pochs fault Foyth had a total brain fart and I rate Foyth. I'd actually have started him. But imo those substitutions made a bad situation worse even before Foyth walked.
I rate Poch as well come to that and a lot was said in anger yesterday by everyone including myself.
Fortunately today my tears have turned from sadness to laughter.
Its a funny old game.

It's been the most bizarre season. We haven't performed as well as we have the last 3 seasons but are now as good as guaranteed top 4 and got the CL semi final.

It has been a difficult season:

More players than any other club in the WC latter stages
Huge unrest with the opening of the stadium dragging on and on
A lot of injuries
No new signings

Not one of the above factors are the sole reason for our lack of performance on the pitch but all did play a part. I believe only a fool would dismiss this.

Poch has done a great job in his time here. He now has a new challenge. We are going to have to sell some players and he either needs to buy the right players or start bringing through the youth. We can't survive on the same usage of the squad again.

I am away at the moment and have not seen the game but I did wonder if Poch was trying to add some more energy and athleticism as we were one man short. At the same time giving Toby a rest before the massive game on Wednesday when we may not have Verts.

the temperature of the game, the way the ref was after missing the Dier red, 1 soft challenge could of seen a disaster. doesn't really matter as I don't see an 8 goal swing, as long as we don't go into the game expecting a none playing Everton. though Id find it hard for Arse to batter Burnley in their last game of the season, when they have struggled away all season, and will need to play a full strength team v Valencia

Forget about the summer and signing ect right now its all about wednesday!

Poch has his chance to prepare for that game now knowing that cl footy is all but secured. He has a chance to end this season on the biggest of high's and take us to the final.

I want to believe.

I may have missed your meaning, but if you're saying that we just don't have enough players in the squad then you're incorrect. If GK wasn't out on loan then there would be 26 players to fit into 25 registration slots I believe.

Our problems have been myriad this season, but it could easily be argued that the major one has been lack of "second XI" quality* i.e. we've had so many injuries at any given time that we've been reduced to playing a number of non-first choice players at once, which is always a recipe for disaster (it's why we never troubled the latter stages of the Europa despite nearly a decade in it). I would be amazed if we haven't used the most players of any team in the Top 4 this season (if not the entire PL).

Bizarrely, had the (extremely unpopular on here at the time) Grealish transfer gone through (and assuming he had stayed fitter for us than he has for Villa), I think we'd have had Top 4 wrapped up a couple of weeks ago as by far the biggest problems have been in CM.

*For the record, I'm not one of the people who believes any club outside of the financially doped ones should or even can seek to maintain 2 complete "starting quality" teams - it's total folly.

Not signing Grealish looks very costly in hindsight. He's the reason Villa are in the play offs. He definitely would have played a big role for us if we'd signed him.

Possibly but, as @Lighty64 is so fond of pointing out, there are no guarantees when it comes to fitness and he's missed a good chunk of this season anyway.

I hope we go back for (and get) him this summer.

So it’s solely down to the WC as to why we’ve capitulated and been poor pretty much since Christmas? Yes it’s a contributing factor but it’s only one of an a-z of reasons why we’ve been poor.

no but the energy levels have been effected, the injuries have happened

Lloris been out
Trippier been out
Jan been out
Rose been out
Dele been out
Dier been out
Eriksen been out
Kane been out
Son been away
Sanchez and Toby have needed rotating
Dembele was just Dembele

on top of that we have suffered. we have only had Dele, Eriksen, Son and Kane in the same team 10 times in 54 matches. if you don't think the WC had anything to do with it, then I can't change your views or understanding of the game.

you have to understand the stadium hasn't helped, playing in a subdued atmosphere, and even the rumours around Poch with RM and Man U. no preseason, no signings, you tell me 1 team that have suffered anything like that this season.

We did it the hard way, but we did it. CL is all but secured and we have every chance of making the CL final on Wednesday. Throughout the adversity of the stadium delay, the injuries, the strain on the squad after the World Cup, no fucking signings, Mike Fucking Dean (and all the other shit **** refs), we made it.

Now back this manager (the best we’ve had in my lifetime) and cement our place as one of the top teams in europe.

COYFS!

haven’t seen anything in our youth players to suggest they are at the required standard to be relied upon yet.

we need to buy. and buy quality.

I agree. My point is relying on the same group of players next season will not work.

100%. goes one of two ways this summer:

‘fuck that was close, we need to invest heavily and refresh the squad, buy quality’

or

‘well we got top 4 and CL after a long summer, no home, loads of injuries. should be able to do even better with the same group next year amd none of that to contend with’

?

It just won’t. We’ve got out of jail this year. It won’t happen again.

This group, especially if weakened by departures, will not make the top 4 again.

It’s lacking variety, depth and quality in too many areas. There are too many injury prone players too.

Need fresh blood, fresh ideas and some pace and skill.

We are, barring the disaster of all disasters, back in the CL and definitely in our stadium.

Time to be bold
