We need better songs

Rather than concentrate on player songs I think we should be trying for something more generic that we’ll be singing years from now after these crop of players are gone. Players will always inherit songs. This season alone we’ve transitioned Seven Nation Army from Mousa to Moussa. The new ground needs a new song. We also need From The Lane to be anthemic.

The thing about Wednesday was it was all a bit manufactured. Ultimately it was Palace at home off the back of 5 poor results. In any other circumstances that game would have a poor atmosphere. It was kind of weird it all felt a bit false like we were trying to prove a point. Thankfully we did to a degree, we proved the acoustics are great and when a real top football match happens it’s gonna be awesome. Watch the place explode if we go 1 up against city. Personally I like a drummer especially if it goes a bit flat to start things rolling. You can’t really expect people to sing for 90 minutes it’s just not physically possible will always be lulls.

How about this one for Sonny? To the tune of dirty old town...

He's from Korea, where the army is shite,
And now he's here, in the lilywhite
He shoots the ball, sticks in the top bin
Son Heung Min, Son Heung Min

Or one for Jan, nicking the old Nicola Berti tune.

My name is Jan Vertoghen, I come from Belgium, play for a team in London, Tottenham!

When I'm eating moules-frites, all the people I meet, sing hey! gorgeous! What's your name? My.. name... is... etc

We're a truculant North London club of middle aged, grumbly fuckers and functioning alcoholics. Some people are very optimistic about what our fan base can be arsed to do at a match.

I truly don't know why we don't sing McNamara's band. Either the original, or a version adapted to modern times, ie: His name is Pochettino, he's the leader of the band....' etc

It's a song that's ours, can't be stolen, is original, has club heritage and has a perfect terrace friendly chant chorus.

Yep. Not everyone who goes to a game wants to sing.

I like the thread though. If people are going to suggest song ideas it might be an idea to post a YouTube video of the original as well as typing out the new lyrics so that people can work out the tune. I'm sure a lot of younger people wouldn't have a clue what McNamara's band is and a lot of our older fans wouldn't have heard of Seven Nation Army.

WHL was great when it was rocking, but let's not kid ourselves, the crowd could be very quiet during some periods too. West Stand would never sing for love nor money, Paxton got a lot quieter when it became a family stand.

When it comes down to it, the prices at Spurs make for a pretty old demographic, who tend not to get as trollied as the younger fans out for a jolly and a singsong.

Spot on. Reading some of the comments on here I think people are remembering the atmosphere at WHL through rose-tinted glasses a bit. As you say, for certain memorable occasions it was absolutely rocking but the vast majority of the time, like at most PL games nowadays, the atmosphere was nothing to write home about.

Definitely time to phase Ozil out of our song lyrics... Doesn't really mean much these days!

Agree completely. On top of that it's always been a particular bugbear of mine that the song for one of our best players is rather than talking about how great he is, is actually just about how he was cheap :rolleyes:

That song is 15 years old now... I feel like an older fan :cry:

I've suggested this before, and got short shrift, but couldn't we have a smartphone app that prompted fans to sign particular songs. You could even do it karaoke-style, so that everyones 'phones belted out the tune, or even just a rythmn. It would show the younger fans the lyrics, let us vote for favourites, and people could upload suggested new songs (as we're doing here) and they might actually get sung. And I'd only charge modest roylaties on the app...

Definitely not. Part of the reason for the lack of atmosphere in the first place is people spending more time glued to their phones tweeting or vlogging about being at the game rather than actually watching it and joining in with the songs. I don't see how encouraging even more people to stare at their phones would help that at all.

For anyone who doesn't know what he's on about:

“Oh the whistle goes
The cockerel crows and now we’re in the game
Its up to you, you Lillywhites to play the Tottenham way

There’s many teams, of many towns
And some are great and small
But the famous Tottenham Hotspur are the greatest of them all!

Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala la”

I'm very much in favour of McNamara's Band being restored to the South Stand's songbook so to speak. Its a higher tempo than a lot of our current chants which makes it easier to keep going for a longer period, and it also means it sounds more celebratory than COYS, When the Spurs go Marching In (our slow version) and From The Lane.

We could even add a second verse building on @thebenjamin idea above, along the lines of:
"His name is Pochettino, he's the leader of the band;
He's made the mighty Lilywhites the best team in the land.

With Dele in the middle, and Harry Kane up top;
We'll take on Europe's finest and we'll beat the fucking lot.

Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala la"
