From this animation (slowed down by EJC on SSC!):

Very nice animation there. I noticed that they have the grass pitch sliding back in one piece rather than the three pieces that were being talked about previously. I wonder if it has changed or they were unsure how it would work and, therefore, kept it simple for the animation.

It's definitely three pieces. The kop end has two foundation pillars in the centre, so it has to be.

That animation has the artificial pitch permanently in place (at least it looks that way) now i've no interest for NFL as i've got too much shit to do but don't they usual remove the astroturf when there's no game on in favour of concrete? (i noticed it when watching Billions so could be talking out of my hat)

The idea is that the Astroturf will remain in situe permanently and the grass pitch will be rolled away for NFL, concerts and any other events not specifically needing the grass pitch. It will open up a whole new revenue stream.

That's what i thought, it's my own fault for watching Billions :bag:

Most modern NFL stadia have a surface called field turf which acts as close to grass as is possible on the knees of players but like an arena floor for concerts or other events. The stadium owners usually cover their surface with some kind of protection and move on. Any astroturf over concrete would strictly be a relic of the 1980s.

Why doesn't the NFL just use grass?

They do sometimes. The sightlines are the reason for the lower pitch as due to all the subs on the side the fans need to be higher to see. Having an artificial surface is easier to maintain than a grass pitch that would be covered the majority of time.

They have done, but because so much of the play focuses on the central area of the pitch for the scrimmage it gets torn up something rotten, and they like the certainty of synthetic despite the greater number of injuries.

So how will the pitch separate? I'm assuming there will be three "trays" with turf on them. But surely whenever the artificial pitch needs to be used, the actual pitch will be torn in three. It's not like we can have join lines running across it.
So surely, each "tray" would need sides to minimise the tearing, but then how much grass "protection" is on top of the sides. Imagine a slide tackle across one of the joins, and catching the top of the edge of the tray the turf is held in.

So by a largely inaccurate process of elimination, I'm hazarding a guess that the mud underneath the grass will be pretty much like a standard pitch. So the only way to separate it into three is to tear the top layer of the pitch. And the several inches of earth and topsoil that will be covering the trays.
Seems to me to be a bit of a convoluted way of doing it, as I can imagine a lot of the pitch needing to be relaid every time it's separated and put back together again?

Hopefully that makes sense?

Unless it's just going to be on a flat, non sided tray that moves and the pitch will be cut where the joins would be before it's retracted. But even that seems improbable. Because when the pitch slides back together, it'll be quite difficult to fill those separation lines in to make a perfectly smooth playing surface again.

Also, I'm assuming the trays will be curved for drainage?
On the stadium tour, at eye level, the pitch is obviously higher in the middle and slopes off to the sides. So surely that's got to be factored in too?

Modern pitches are not all grass and are sewn together anyway.

Shit, no way?!

I've just found this website.

dessosports.com

Their "grassmaster" pitch is installed all over the Premier League.

Didn't realise there was artificial grass happening also. That's mental. Premier League pitches look to be about 3-4% artificial. I thought it'd be more than that.
The strands are injected every 2cm approx and then seeded on top.

Never knew that!

So I'm assuming when a big divot come out of the pitch, they're probably a pain to replace properly.
