Fucking hell. I really hope this is Levy's doing, and not Pochettino's, because if the new manager thinks Rose is worth keeping, I fear for this season.

Awful player with an awful attitude.

Thankfully thats just your opinion.

Danny needs to think more and run less, but apart from being a little impetuous at times, he will be fine. Give us some much needed competition for key areas

Well Poch did say when we signed Davies that he would provide competition for Rose. Obviously implied that he saw something in Danny that he believed could be useful. All those people claiming he got all stroppy because Ben signed simply jumped to conclusions IMO without any real basis. Simply a case of putting 2 and 2 together to get 5.

I'm very happy, we may finally have a balanced squad.

Well done Poch, good man management.

I think Davies and Rose are very different, and playing time may well depend on opponent. Davies is more disciplined defensively, but not as aggressive attacking. Rose is the polar opposite. I also see Rose as a great bench option - could fill in as a sub at LB or LW.

And, has anyone mentioned squad depth yet????????

Should send Fryers out on loan now. No point in having him be third choice. Don't see him as a CB either

This was probably why Jan hasn't signed his new contract yet - was waiting for us to secure 2 left-backs in the squad!!

I have to say I'm a little surprised, and now need to reset my mindset about Danny to where it was at the beginning of last season!

Surprised.

I really thought he'd be miffed at having Davies come in. Hopefully this shows he wants to compete for the spot and will be able to get better. Plus, there are lots of games he can play in even as 2nd choice.

Basically the vast majority of people use pretty minor things like that he isn't really a 'smiley' person and puts himself about a bit on the pitch (which he needs to, to be honest, being about 5ft 5 and playing in defence), once had a few words with Tony Parks during a game (like that never happens elsewhere) and is lazy with his tracking back (more a bad habit than anything malicious, something others in the squad are equally guilty of and should be stamped out by the coaching staff really), plus he once really controversially said that after playing week in, week out at Sunderland he would quite like to be playing week in, week out if he went back to Tottenham rather going back to the bench/reserves again... And make him out to be some sort of disruptive influence/terrible professional when really we know very little about any of the players and how they really act.

Edit: That's not aimed at you personally, Danners (y)

I agree on the attitude front, and that has made him look worse than he is at times.

But it's clear he's not just an awful player. He was very good at Sunderland, and I think last season even when his defending was atrocious, there were times when he contributed positively going forwards.

If last season was all we'd ever seen of him then I'd agree that it would be strange, but if he sorts his attitude out I think he can still be a useful squad member.

Based on last season though, that could be a Peter Crouch sized 'if'.

See, it's not so much a new contract that staggers me, it's the fact it's a 5 year deal!!!

Surely such a generous length (and likely pay increase) wasn't warranted?!

I didn’t have a problem with his attitude when he first broke into the team. And I am not sure Sunderland fans did. Last season he had a bad one, so did most of our players, but was unfairly scapegoated. No one’s perfect, he’s still young like all players form and development are never linear. Worst case scenario is that he turns out to be surplus to requirements and we sell him for good money and reinvest. Best case scenario he ups his game and we have serious competition for places. Oh no, slash wrists time.

This awful attitude is based on so much perception and supposition. Having signed a left back, he now wants to stay and fight for his place when presumably he could have gone back up north. A pretty good attitude I say.

2 words - Home Grown.

The squad is very short of them. It's another reason we are looking to bring in MS and let one of our other MF's go.

If Fryers, Mason, Fredericks and Carroll go out on loan, as I expect, it means we'll only have 6 HG's in the squad.

Davies and Kane still count a U21 players.

Yeh, well, my viewpoint was more than he was the starting LB and then they signed a new one. Like if I was at work and they hired someone else to do my job. I'd feel a bit put out.

I don't know much about his personality.

As I said in a previous post, whilst he does need to improve everyone should get a clean slate under a new manager and so far during pre-season he has been one of our better players and probably better than Davies. So far, albeit at an early stage, there are signs that Poch has had an effect/he has realised he needs to improve.

If Fryers, Mason and Carroll go out on loan, as I expect, it means we'll only have 8 HG's in the squad.

This means if we sell Dawson we'll have to replace him with another HG player unless we bring in MS and let another non HG player go.

Tis a very good point. Sadly pretty much all of our homegrown players are on the fringes of the team, but that doesn't mean we can get rid of all of them.

As much as I'm not a big fan of Rose, we will need cover. He makes for decent backup when you consider he's first team standard for most bottom half Premiership teams.

The major issue I have with Rose is attitude, and hopefully this is a sign that he's going to improve on his attitude. I, including many others, felt that he would've thrown a strop and wanted to fuck off elsewhere as soon as competition came in. Perhaps he isn't as precious as that and is willing to fight for his place and prove his worth.

It's also good for the club in terms of homegrown and club grown, required for both the league and Europa.
