It is very much all going on when it comes to Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer market. Springing into action very early on in the window to bring Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin to the club, Spurs have also agreed on a total of 10 January outgoings.

i get why people like emerson. he seems like a really great character, gives his all, never complains and generally does a pretty solid job wherever he's asked to play. that said, i think it's somewhat of a fallacy when people say he covers rb, lb and cb. yes he can play there in a literal sense but if porro or udogie are out for any real period of time(let's hope not), i give it two games before those same people championing his versatility will be crying at how much we lose with either of them out of the side. a full back and an ange full back are also world's apart, it takes a very unique skill set to play that role, a skill set that emerson, as much as we like him as a member of the squad, clearly doesn't have. if anything he's a better cb in this system than a fb but we have dragusin now so he's not going to be needed there again but for another injury crisis.

When have you seen him play RB in Ange's system?

Brentford away?

It's not a great sample size to be stating catagorically that Emerson can't play that role in Ange's system though is it? I'm interested to know where this thought train has come from since so many seem to subscribe to it. I thought he was very good getting into the same sort of attacking positions as Porro does now when he played as a WB for Conte. He also paired up well with Kulusevski.

It doesn’t make sense to sell him now, but in the summer, I could see him moving on.

I agree.
Granted, we've not seen him play much at right or left back under Ange but I've liked what little I've seen.
He does pretty well at both coming infield and getting into the box.
I think some have their minds set that he's not a very good player purely down to his start with us, when in actual fact, he's a very solid option to have and more than capable.

I think they made their minds up about him, slagged him off, and now in a back track way saying he doesn’t fit the way Ange wants to play. Apparently you need some sort of fantastic skill set for this.

well it took half our squad getting nuked before ange even played emerson so it doesn't seem like he's particularly convinced he has the skill set either.

davies did great at cb and i'd keep him for that role.

Porro has been more or less available the whole time hasn't he? Emerson was picked at CB ahead of the talked about youth and a senior CB in Dier when Romero and VDV were suspended/injured. So what does that tell you? It tells you Emerson is actually more trusted in an unnatural role than others. Emerson as a squad player is a role model whether people want to admit it or not. He spent a million pound on improving himself. That's his mentality. Could do with more of that rubbing off onto others and the youth coming through.

it tells me ange really didn't rate dier, hence why he has now gone and didn't think the youth were ready, hence why the one at the head of the queue has now been allowed to go out on loan. emerson playing over those options is hardly evidence of how much ange may or may not rate him and we've since signed an actual cb so the need for him to play there has now been reduced.

emerson started the first game of the season but despite scoring was then dropped and played 21 minutes over the next 7 games, before the injuries rolled in. that doesn't scream of a player who is highly rated by the manager to me. even if porro was available the entire time, you'd think ange would have found emerson a bit more time if he truly considered him to be an important player going forward. even the much maligned hojbjerg played more. most fans can't wait to get him out but from where i'm sitting, i don't see a great deal of difference in their respective situations. both are able to come in and do an ok job but don't have a defined role within the team in the long-term. seems to me that one is just more liked than the other.

i already agreed that he has an excellent mentality and i wouldn't be actively trying to shove him out the door but other than being the likeable gap plugger, i don't see what his long-term role here is. if you can get 25m for him and invest that in a dragusin equivalent at fb then i don't know why you wouldn't do that.
