We didn't sell him, but he joined PSV on a free because he thought he had more chance there of breaking in the first team. He also rejected an offer from Man. United at the time.

In that sense, just like Sancho.

Have Man City ever been criticised for "selling" Sancho though? (not that I'm implying the media is biased against us...)

He was pretty determined to get out of there if I remember correctly. Have to applaud him for that (and madueke for that matter).

You've got to love the fact, the next phil foden is only a year younger than the current one

But they have talked about Pogba, De Bruyne and a few others.
Although they left for similar reasons, those aren't really similar comparisons:

Madueke was an academy player who chose to leave at the age of 16, before he had a professional contract. We never bought or sold him. He had never played first-team football and was not a proven talent

Pogba joined Man Utd aged 16 - the same age as Madueke was when he left us. Pogba played first team football for Man Utd, but felt he deserved more playing time than he got. Man Utd were able to assess his ability/talent as an adult within the first-team squad.

Chelsea bought De Bruyne as a 20-year-old, loaned him straight back for half a season, then loaned him out for another year. By the time Chelsea sold him, De Bruyne was 22 and had played top-flight football in three countries (including a successful season in the Bundesliga). He had proven he was good enough, but didn't get the chances he needed at Chelsea. There was already plenty of evidence that Chelsea should have done more to convince him to stay.

You've also got to love that at the age Madueke left us (16) Phil Foden was already good enough to make his PL debut for the title winning team, while Madueke evidently wasn't yet good enough to play for an inferior team in an inferior league.

They clearly have identical career trajectories ?

All I can say is that such stories are just typical journo BS hindsight garbage. We went for John Bostock who was supposed to be the next HUGE star. He caved. He is now incredibly happy playing in the Dutch second league - no pressure, just pure enjoyment of the game.

Just watch Moneyball to see that there is no crystal ball. Some guys make it in the big leagues, most don't.
