When we got to the CL final, I was sure I read somewhere that it qualified us for this. Don't be ridiculous. Then I forgot all about it until out of nowhere, it popped back into my head whilst fondling a lollipop lady. Well, she was dressed like one anyway :cautious:

All I could find on it was the Wiki page for the competition

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Club_World_Cup#Expansion

From there:

In late 2016, FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested an expansion of the Club World Cup to 32 teams beginning in 2019 and the reschedule to June to be more balanced and more attractive to broadcasters and sponsors. In late 2017, FIFA discussed proposals to expand the competition to 24 teams and have it be played every four years by 2021, replacing the FIFA Confederations Cup.

The new tournament, planned to start in 2021, would be held every four years instead of annually, would feature 24 teams and 31 matches. It would include all UEFA Champions League winners, UEFA Champions League runners-up, UEFA Europa League winners and Copa Libertadores winners from the four seasons up to and including the year of the event, with the remainder qualifying from the other four confederations. Along with a new UEFA Nations League competition, revenues of $25 billion would be expected during the period from 2021 to 2033.

So, did we qualify for the event originally scheduled for 2021? If so, will we be in it if and when it's rescheduled?

Probably bollocks but fucked if I know. It's reaching for the stars for sure, so unlike Spurs, but so like us if we did qualify and then didn't because it was cancelled :D

I never imagined us in this that's for sure.

In March 2019, FIFA decided to expand the Club World Cup starting in 2021, with the first tournament to be played in China. However, the tournament was postponed due to scheduling issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

I want to hear more about this lollypop lady.

Does she bring her own uniform and stick or did you need to provide?

Basically it’s gonna happen in China. They have no fixed date for it and haven’t yet quantified how you qualify. Will take a while but imo this is gonna become quite a big deal. If a country World Cup is such a big deal then why shouldn’t a club World Cup be ? Yes of course it will be dominated by European and South American but then so is the country World Cup. But it gives real incentive to leagues like MLS to have a Malory club competition to play in.

Uefa get 8 slots. Anyone guess how it’s allocated but probably some nonsense historical ranking so Barcelona and United are assured entry.

Would like this , will need to have a big squad but seems we're on track for that. Ideally have it in summer when there's no world cup or euros.

This is a different wiki specific for next tournament in China that’s what I was using. It says qualifying criteria not decided and Uefa 8 slots. From memory I definitely don’t remember hearing anywhere that qualifying criteria had been decided.

I don't think the European clubs or UEFA ever actually agreed to it - it was a power play by FIFA that so far hasn't really come off. But if it does happen, we'll definitely be included as the winners of the 2023 Champions League!

Looks pretty official here. If it’s a FIFA organised tournament do UEFA actually have to agree. Obviously it’s better if they do but not sure they have that hold over clubs. Plus the clubs aren’t gonna turn down £50m or whatever will be worth.

I didn't say it wasn't official, but so was the Super League. That doesn't mean it's actually going to happen. And the European Club Association, which includes all the big teams, openly opposed it. They didn't want to get involved in this FIFA-UEFA war, especially as it could dilute the value of rights for the existing UEFA competitions.
