Totally agree. You got certain section of Spurs fans that get more pleasure out of "net spend " than they do going out and showing a bit of ambition to push us that next level up. I'm sure Mancity supporters when Aguero smashed that last minute winner for the title were saying " I wish we had better net spend " .... fact of the matter is we have a chairman that whilst has done some great things, is also an absolute nightmare in transfer market when it comes to preparing the manager for a season. Every summer it's like Groundhog Day. We are always short of something or someone. This summer takes the absolute piss though. Not 1 single reinforcement and not even looking likely or close to making one either. You even have our manager coming out and saying exactly what us sane Spurs fans have been saying for donkeys years. Get our bussiness done early so we can go into a season prepared for once. I can't wait to win the net spend trophy again this season.
The thing that irritates me is that Levy seems to think that waiting until the last minute will net us a bargain on a player, it won't and it rarely does, what normally happens is, all our original targets have already signed contracts with the clubs they are with because we dragged our feet or they have left for another club willing to meet the original transfer fee.
Then, Levy panic buys at the last minute to keep the manager happy because he didn't get his original targets (see Sissoko) and ends up having to pay £30M anyway but on a complete flop.
And what is the lesson that Daniel takes from this? It's not that he should be more proactive in the market and maybe concede on some deals to make sure the manager gets his targets, oh no, it's "Well, look what happened last time I spent £30M, it was a waste of money, we can't afford to be taking gambles like that anymore."
That's just my impression of the situation over the years anyway, what Levy has to realise is, the money wouldn't be wasted if we knew how to spend the money wisely, there is talent out there we can find at good prices (look at Alli for example) but we need to act fast and early and sometimes you know, pay that little bit extra, we got £50M for Kyle, have we seen that money reinvested in another RB and some more depth? No.
I can't help but think that Mitchell leaving has really affected things as well, we seem to have a scatter gun approach right now, Levy's biggest failing and strength has been transfers, he is great at finding a bargain sometimes but more often than not, his approach backfires and leaves us short at the start of every campaign.
We might not be able to afford to blow money left right and centre but you know what we can afford even less? Having this team and this manager break up because we have shown a lack of ambition.
I will say it again, a stadium isn't going to be enough to keep footballers happy, they want trophies and to compete with the best and they want to earn what the best earn, it's frankly a miracle that we have managed to even keep the players we have happy for so long considering half of them could earn double what they get currently and walk into pretty much any side in this league, credit to Poch for that.
