Matt Doherty has opened up on his transfer to Tottenham back in 2020, revealing the close discussions he had with then-head coach Jose Mourinho and admitting the move understandably did wonders for his ego.

The wing-back opted to bring the curtain down on 10 years at Wolves after impressing in his first two seasons as a Premier League player, earning a move to Spurs for just over £13m.

This is actually really interesting and just shows when fans at the time were saying Jose is a bad manager and didn't get the most out of Doherty, Doherty has just came out and said the exact opposite and that he didn't grasp it or perform well and that the manager put faith in him and he let the manager down.

I don’t know much I would read into his comments. Only a handful of players would ever come out and slag a manager off. It’s good copy to say they liked the manager and to take responsibility. Look at all the Villa players now with Gerrard.

Meh I tend to take Doherty’s word on this one, he seems like a straight talking guy.

Our fans were far too quick to turn on Jose, almost as if they wanted him to fail. Quite a few of our players showed some form of improvement under Jose, including Son and Kane who became a deadly partnership. Too bad the Doherty signing didn't work as he desired, since we can see now there's a decent player in there.
