Serie A star keen on summer move to London

13 Jan 2011 08:00:00

Chelsea and Tottenham are set to battle it out to capture the signature of Palermo's £15 million-rated midfielder Josip Ilicic, Goal.com UK can reveal.

The Slovenian midfielder, 22, joined the Serie A side from his native Maribor at the end of August, along with compatriot Armin Bacinovic.

Ilicic has made an impressive start to life in Italy, bagging seven goals in 18 league games.

The London giants are primed to swoop for the player in a summer move which could cost up to £20m if his club are unwilling to let him go.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti is most keen to improve his squad, particularly his midfield, following the dismal run of form in recent weeks.

But he will face stiff competition from Italian giants Juventus, AC Milan and Inter who have all expressed interest.

"Yes, there are three very big Italian clubs who have shown interest but Chelsea and Tottenham, this is different," a source close to the player told Goal.com UK.

"Let's be very clear, he is confident of playing in any league in the world. But he is happy where he is for now.

"He has a great relationship with the manager [Delio Rossi] and chairman [Maurizio Zamparini], but he is only 22 and has ambition."

Rumours had circulated that Ilicic could make his move in January, however this is out of the question as he has already registered with two clubs this season.

He's having a tremendous season so far - and in La Gazzetta dello sport he's gotten an average of 6,5 (1-10); higher then Zidane, Kaka, Zlatan got in their first season. He cost them a mere Euro 3m and earns Euro 250,000...a year.

Even better than that. Him and Bacinovic (who's also a regular for them - 21-year-old midfielder) cost all of 2.3m euros. What a coup.
