How do people know so much about players linked to Spurs.

This is a genuine request for information.

Whenever a new player (of whom I’ve usually never heard) is linked to the club, people on SC are able to express opinions on that player seemingly based on facts.

How do people do this: by watching lots of football, surfing the net, playing games?

Here's my in depth scouting process.

1. Consult Wikipedia. Does he have a long wiki page? Longer is better. Is there a "style of play" section, also good. Does the introduction section use the words "starlet", "promising", "highly rated". Does he have international experience. If striker, what is his goals to game ratio.

2.. Search his name under Google News. Have Real Madrid expressed interest in him? If yes, that's good but probably means he's not coming here.

3. Youtube for indepth play analysis. Watch 3 minute highlight reel (2 minutes of this reel will be an intro with dramatic music and close-ups of the players face). See him score a Rabona against Belgian second division opposition. I'm sold.
