Not the greatest comparison.
As others have stated how Athletico bends their own monetary rules, but they do it in other ways as well. Ways we can't hope to replicate.
1) Selling shares of a player to 3rd parties to alleviate transfer costs. They've been able to still throw money around which isn't there's at players we can't afford because of this.
This practice is now banned and it's going to become incredibly interesting to see how Spanish and Portuguese clubs in particular cope as this has been an incredibly common practice for them.
2) Buying up young South American talent by the droves. We can't do this because of work permits, we can only buy the established talent when their fees are very large.
Credit to Athletico for developing the talent, but really think about some of Athleticos best players and biggest player sales and you'll find a large majority are South Americans who were bought at a very young age.
3) Athletico may look small next to Real and Barca, but they're still the 3rd club in that league by a pretty fair margin so over achieving isn't as hard when you're going from 3rd to 2nd or 1st. Plus they garner more champions league money and get to attract players who want champions league as well.
