I honestly think English refs think they are an important part of the spectacle and responsible for entertainment. I remember Clatenburg talking of the battle of the bridge game where he said he was trying to create a narrative by allowing us to “bottle it”. Reeked of self importance and corruption.
Also refs protect their mates. It’s all built on a house of cards, once one of them is called out and made to answer publicly for their incompetence it’s only a matter of time before the next one gets pulled up when he messes up as it sets a precedent.
