You're not going to get consistency from different referees. What one ref thinks is different to another. I met Craig Pawson a couple of weeks ago and he was explaining it very well to me.
I can understand that, though they should strive for it naturally.

I really mean even consistency within a match. If Watkins got booked for his one where he made no attempt to play the ball, then there's no complaints from anyone at all when McGinn gets sent off for his. It sets a tone and a level of expectation for the players and fans. Maybe McGinn never even makes his stupid one if he's seen Watkins get booked for softer. But he's instead seen them diving in and getting away with it, and I'm sure "rightly" in his mind only expected a yellow for his one as did a lot of the rest of us based on what had been allowed up to that point.

Another example being Sarr tripping over and getting booked for falling into a Villa player. At one point Cash slipped and got his studs down the back of of of our's ankles, and it genuinely didn't look like he meant it if fairness to the prat. But...not even blown for, never mind a card.

Impossible to know for certain, but if that challenge hadn’t happened in front of the dugout and if our players hadn’t gone nuts, would the ref have shown a red?

Little things like this can be very very important - players pressuring the ref, the manager snarling before and after the game in interviews.

Both Fergie and Jose, two people who are definitely not stupid, knew the value of these things over the course of a season
Yes anywhere on the pitch reaction or not its a red. Even if ref doesnt give it there is no way in hell VAR doesnt make that red

it’s 100% a red every day of the week however I disagree with you that if the ref didn’t give it then VAR would have as it’s one of those that can easily be painted as “mis-timed” rather than reckless so that the VaR doesn’t have to pull up their mate.

Fair play to the ref for having the balls to show him the straight red.

I've a couple of Villa mates who'd said before the game they were worried about this match as we were one of the first decent sides to play them since Kamara was ruled out for the season. It seems he was the glue in their midfield allowing McGinn and Luiz to get forward and generally charge about with Kamara protecting in behind them. It highlights again how crucial a proper 6 is to any sort of 4-3-3 type formation, we witnessed it ourselves when Bissouma and Bentancur were out and even Man City for all their resources are so heavily reliant on Rodri. Perhaps that was why Emery went with 5 at the back knowing the midfield probably couldn't cope.

The ref was perfectly placed, though. Looked right at it from a fitting distance. But I didn't expect him to send him off either, even though it was one of the clearest reds you'll see all season.

Totally agree, it’s a stonewall red all day long, but you have more confidence in the refs and VAR officials than i have. Give them an opportunity to make the wrong decision and they will grab it with both hands

It's a good point and also very interesting now to see that teams are changing against us because they feel threatened and are trying to stop us, where as with some previous managers we have changed our setup to counter other teams. It feels like Ange doesn't even know what a different setup is unless we are losing late in a game. He just wants to put the pressure on other teams to figure his tactics out.
Totally this. Obviously a draw would have suited them. I think they watched some of our recent performances at home against teams that play a low block and try and spring a counter (like Wolves). Probably felt like a draw or nicking a win like this was the smart play. On another day it works for them and everyone thinks Good Ebening is a tactical genius.

On reflection I bet they just wished they played their normal formation/game.

That was a red all day long, as was the dreadful leg breaker by Matt fucking Cash on Doherty two seasons ago. Fuck Matt Cash.

I don't think their normal formation /game would have helped them to be honest. We were just simply on our game and better than them.

Emery has done a great job and has got them overperforming but when you see the lineups for both teams it's clear we should be finishing above them IMO.

The mental gymnastics I've seen from Villa fans to try and explain how McGinn shouldn't have been sent off are something else. "It wasn't a red, it was a yellow. A horrible horrible horrible yellow but still a yellow" How many horribles do you have to add to a yellow before it becomes a red?
Ask Matt cash

Yeah my thoughts exactly.

It was actually worse than I thought at the time. But you could see from Johnson's action it was worthy of the uproar.

But I wasn't expecting the red cause we have seen Shaw, Cash and others do that to our players and in some cases not even get a yellow.

I have repeatedly stated that I fucking hate it when a player does that and feel even more aggravated when the ref does not give it what it deserves.

On another note, our players need to react like that more often. I think we often let stuff like that slide or are too soft.

When Maddison got elbowed he did get up and react but we probably needed a player just telling the ref or getting in Lerma's face too.

Chelsea first minute, on Kulu not even a foul given sossors him off the pitch!

I think the player reaction caused the red, we have had worse and no foul or a yellow this season.

I reckon 98% of the country thinks it was definitely a red with a few biased fans and also a lot of the Aston Fornilla fanbase.

Like many others I want to see our lads sticking up for their rights and safety against the thugs and maybe make those refs think twice about avoiding decisions. Fair play to Kavanagh yesterday.

Just before he was carded he crossed the ball, and we made a crucial clearance, the camera shows how Mc Ginn runs into central midfield, and runs parallel to Udogie. Suddenly, he runs about 10 metres, full tilt in our lad. The pace he ran at clearly indicated that he intended to to knock him flying, even after making contact, he staggered on another 6 or 7 metres into the people on the touchline. Frustration got the better of him, one of his team mates tapped their head as McGone walked off, indicating that he had lost it.

I know we are all rightfully hating on McGinn in here after Sunday, but he is obviously a really good player.
