I don't think Walker has to recover last ditch as often
We are leaving our CBs 1 v 1 with no help in order to force our press.

Maybe they need to deal with the first ball better when it gets knocked into the space/up to the strikers (Romero and VDV that is) but Im not sure the approach is going to change so hoping his body can handle it.

He's obviously not got the pace VDV has but I thought Dragusin covered very well when he came on. He can get across the pitch pretty quickly.

But the point is that we're being countered and putting ourselves in position to last ditch too often. City don't leave themselves to the counter as often. I don't see Walker making as many last ditch tackles as VdV has to make. It just doesn't seem to be sustainable and I don't even see us doing it earlier in the season. It's largely due to the press not being as good of late. 2nd half was a lot more like it was earlier in the season. VdV will have the odd moment to recover but not as often which will carry less risk of injury. Recent games have been far too in the balance with the opposition attacking and us making last ditch challenges more than should happen. If you leave your centre backs one on one then you need the numbers to count higher up the pitch and press better.

You are spot on about numbers counting higher up the pitch. City recover the ball really wel in the oposition half so their defenders are not exposed as often as VDV and Romero.

Mainly because City don't give the ball away higher up the pitch as often as we do, but they've had years of practice playing this way and we haven't.
This. We're still in season 1 and Pep has had how many years doing it (with the best players)?

And they're a lot more cynical to stop opponents countering quickly. Plus they have Rodri who is world class in defensive central areas.

Agree that ideally we need to leave vdV exposed left often. But I think it’s more a case of controlling games better than changing our approach.

We tend to struggle defensively when our midfield is not playing well, usually because we give up possession too cheaply. But that should happen less as we develop. Especially when some things should naturally improve, like Sarr gaining more experience, and hopefully players like Bentancur and Maddison having better seasons in terms of fitness.

Switching to a more open system has also been a part of making up for Kane’s lost goals - he scored over 40% of our Premier League goals last season. Under a more cautious minded system we may have struggled a bit for goals this season.

Finally, It does make me laugh a bit, when people say, if not for vvD where would we be.. or if not for Vic.. etc it’s like shocker, good team has good players who do their jobs well.

Exactly, just stating where we need to improve and how it's not helping VdV having to recover so often as he does

We'll be much better set once the injuries and suspensions level out a bit. City, by contrast, have a very settled and well drilled squad and don't suffer any significant drop off when they rotate. We're certainly getting there but we're miles behind them right now being as we've done a complete 180 turn in such a short time in the way we approach the game. Couldn't get much further apart in philosophy between Ange and Conte/Mourinho. I personally couldn't be happier with the way the players have taken to Ange's style and we're actively looking for quality players to plug the gaps too.

Yeah City have set such a high bar. But the fact we can even talk sensibly about how we might start to approach that kind of standard, just shows how much progress we have made this season.

It’s also worth noting that for all our defensive frailties, we still have the joint fourth best defensive record in the league. So it’s not like we’ve been a defensive disaster this season, like how some people talk about it. We’re also the joint fourth highest goal scorers. In other words, we’re right about where most people see us, about fourth best team in the league. And good as he is, that’s not all down to van de Ven!

Well said @Japhet and @mil1lion

We need time and keep backing the team, with love and support how much better will some players be!

one thing we do need to improve is our home form, Anfield is a absolute fortress we need to make WHL / Tottenham stadium a place where its impossible to win and this is down to us as much as the team!

It’s defo a hamstring strain, my friend spoke to him today, said it’s not as bad as last time and he came off at the right time. Lovely guy by all accounts.

To be honest, Radu could play against Luton as well.

Micky back in for 2nd April away to West Ham would be my guess
