This kid is 22 years old and has the potential to be one of the very best defenders on the planet. What a fucking signing.

Would be so spurs to go the younger, cheaper and far more raw option, and then bring in Lenglet as well. I'm happy with this signing if it's in addition to tapsoba or another far more complete defender; but if he's the main CB signing then I'm going to be disappointed; it's not enough
Me too mate. Furious.

Our best signing last summer. With Vic, Maddison and (technically) Porro, that's a very high bar.
Last summer? More like since Son.

The announcers in the US feed, every time Palace tried countering would be like “well, thats not going to work, is it?”

It's like having Zeus at centre back. The guy is imperious.

There are three CBs who stand out in this league: Van Dijk, Saliba, and Micky. Van Dijk is on the wane, Saliba like to film kids tossing off, and Micky plays for us.

He is simply incredible. At 22 years old he has to be up there with the best young centre backs on the planet!

We did so well to get him.

Alot of top teams would've been after him
They would be now but they weren't last summer when he was just a kid playing in an average Bundesliga side, by all accounts he was even our second choice.
Terrific yesterday though with the Palace no 14 throwing his weight around trying to bully him all game.

Because this place only does negativity..

He was my MOTM. Absolute monster of a player.
Scary thing is he's still developing while he's putting in world class performances in his debut season. Although his pace is a cheat code, he's also an excellent all-round footballer, which just elevates his game to another level.

So we have a world cup winner and the imperious VDV at the heart of our defence and we still keep conceding goals. Ok, yesterday was a worldie free kick, the other week it was counter attacks, next week it will be something else, the point is with the keeper and defenders we have, we should be shutting teams out more regularly, this has the added benefits of putting more pressure on our opponents and easing the pressure on our forwards. Only 6 teams have fewer clean sheets than us this season and IMHO the likes of Vic, Romero and VDV are the types of players who truly value a clean sheet. Woolwich have twice as many clean sheets as us, and they still score goals, do we think their defenders are twice as good as ours?

We do need to keep more clean sheets ideally, but I’ll take the 3 points for now.

It’s also worth noting that we have the seventh best defensive record in the league right now, whereas last season we finished with the fifteenth best defensive record.

Arsenal are a benchmark to aim for but they are deep into their project and conceded twenty goals fewer than us last season! They also have the best defensive record in the league this season.

van de Ven is great but he’s missed a lot of games through injury and, anyway, bridging a 20 goal difference to Arsenal in one season under a new manager, style of play etc is always going to be a big ask. Even with the “impervious” van de Ven.

Immense. How the fuck did we get a clear run at signing him?
Carragher (paraphrasing) said Liverpool scouted him but weren't fully convinced.

I can't find anything on the internet to support that though, it looks like the scout did recommend him but Spurs moved faster to close the deal (remember Tapsoba was first choice but didn't lead anywhere so they moved onto the next option).

Arteta would be extremely happy to have our first-choice back line. He'd be looking elsewhere on the field to improve the whole setup of the team, which would also improve team defence. It would take him years to do it, just as it has at Arsenal.
